So I've been shooting and reoading 44 magnum for many many moons now with absolutely ZERO interest in the 44spl. Recently while my wife (got married last week:) was sitting in the basement talking to me while I was reloading, she noticed an old box of 44 spl brass i've had sitting around for a long time with no use for. She asked "if you load these could I shoot your 44 and it wont hurt?" (she's never shot it but thinks it's "real pretty"). After much sighing and grumbling about how if the spl was still relavent there wouldn't be a magnum I agreed to make her some. She is an incredible shot with her 357 from light trailboss 38's all the way up to my...ridiculous 357's but is recoil sensitive non the less so I decided i'd just try 6 grains of clays with my tru-cast 240gr swc's. The results are a personal best for me in the target shooting dept. (something I rarely do). This is the group from my ruger sbh 44 magnum 4 5/8" barrel.

disregard the small hole in the center black that was a 22-250

1.5 inches center to center, sitting down, resting elbows between my knees @25 yards off the back porch (that's my pinky finger)

I believe this will definitely be my new load for everything with this gun except hunting. And to think all this time I've been telling people the 44spl was useless:banghead::banghead:

Soooo, don't be so quick to disregard what the wife says from now on. Because of a simple question you found a great load for the range. BTW, that .44 Special round can be used for hunting too, just not very big game.

That is a very good load and some good shooting too...

It might interest you to know that 6.0 grains Clays and a 240 LSWC will shoot clear through the biggest deer that walks the woods in the USA.

And leave a impressive blood trail squirting out both sides of it before it fall's down dead within sight.

That may very well be true I don't doubt it a bit. That comment seems to have sparked a little controversy! the only reason i said this load will be relegated to target work is because I do primarily longer range shooing with my handguns so I usually use a very fast load. But who knows maybe I'll kill a deer this year with a 44spl!

Don't ya just love it when somebody discovers what is old and discounted is the bees knees again.:D That's really why I reload in the first place---having custom ammo that's available nowhere else at any price.

Kduuks, you are one slow learner. Please don't take to much offense by that. I routinely shoot 44 Specials in my 44 Mag and love it. Welcome to the party. Ahhhh, I can't shoot a 1.5" group at 25 yards ---- you got me on that one.

It's easier to find and use .44 Magnum brass with a lite load (in the context of reloading). I'll let the ammo buyers worry about finding .44 Special ammo.

There was a really good thread over on the Cast Boolit forum regarding hunting loads for a .44 Magnum. I found it interesting that some of the seasoned, experienced handgun hunters pretty much stated that if a 250 gr. .44 caliber bullets started at 950 fps will shoot through a deer, there's little reason to use a 1200 fps load. (Which by the way is possible in the .44 Special, pretty much negating the need for a .44 Magnum for me!)

How many shots are in that group? It looks like two or three different diameters ? Also, what distance?

Been shooting lite 44"s for years a 240gr. SWC on top of 8.0gr. of Unique is my favorite target load. 10 grains will give you an excellent hunting load for just about anything in the lower 48. Lately, thanks to the powder shortage, I've been working up loads with Universal clays. Same burn rate as Unique but it actually meters better and burns cleaner.
8.0gr. of Universal delivers the same effect as the Unique loading but seems to feel just a tad bit hotter. Haven't had a chance to chrony them.

BigG...it looks like some holes are bigger than others because they are...look at the larger picture. When you shoot two or more that touch it creates a larger hole........

The .44 spcl is a great round...and has had a heckuva reputation for it's accuracy since it's inception in 1907. It took 106 years...but I'm glad you finally found it!

Like you, I prefer to shoot the magnum...but i do have a .44 spcl and it's a joy to shoot.

Your right who am I kidding, I'm an addict and nobody likes a quitter! Now back to my extended game of how fast can I push a heavy bullet before stuff breaks;)

Just kidding

But seriously...
