I came across a very nice Nikon Monarch scope (8412) that I think would work well for me, it's used and it was purchased as a Factory Refurb. From what I can tell, Nikon offers a 90 day warranty on their refurbs, the expiration date has since passed on this one.
On the plus side it's a well cared-for scope that normally would have retailed for around $1200, I can pick it up for around $450.
On the other side, my intended use is to mount it on a Marlin 1895 chambered for 45/70 Govt. Not being a low recoil round tells me the scope will be "pushed"; it's not sitting on a pea shooter.
Anyway, just wondering if anyone may have first-hand knowledge about Nikon refurbs and subsequent failures, or just jump in and share your thoughts.
If this was not available, I would not spend $1200 on a new one, the Marlin 45/70 is not exactly a sniper rifle, or even a long range one. I would spend $450 to put nice glass on her though, she's real purdy and deserves it
