On Wed's at a local flea market there is one place that all the gun buyer/seller/traders congregate. Today while I was there we were all having a decent conversation when out of nowhere a man walked up and pointed to a 20rd mag for a SKS and went into a rant about why no one should have anything like that. He went on to say that only LEO's or military should have anything that could have more than 3-5 rds. I have always been able to think on my feet and at least defend a position or view point but this time it came out of nowhere and I was at a loss for words as was the other 12-15 men that were there. The guy finished his rant and just turned and walked away, then conversation went on like he had never been there. As an after thought I believe that my not saying anything to him was probably the best thing as when I look back at his attitude I do think it would have escalated to a worse situation. But at same time I am troubled by me not at least responding even in a simple remark.

High capacity mags?

- Multiple attackers/multiple home invaders

- Adreniline = missed shots. need more shots incase of determined criminals

- Can we actually trust the government with the only high-cap mags?? NO

- If high-cap mags are NECESSARY for Law Enforcement to keep them safer and more effectively deal with determined criminals, then why should civilians have any less?

I would have thanked him for exercising his 1st amendment right, then ask him to extend me the same courtesy with my 2nd amendment right.

That's the problem we have arguing with the antis. It's very easy for them. They can just claim whatever BS sorta-kinda sounds believable on the surface. Doesn't take much effort. We however insist on using facts which take time and effort to learn and get right. So unless you go out of your way to be good at arguing with these people, you just won't have a factual argument at hand (or on mind) at that particular moment in time when some nitwit just materializes out of thin air and starts dribbling nonsense from his face hole.

That's also a common tactic of theirs. They're not interested in having a conversation. They just want to give you a lecture on how terrible you are for supporting gun rights and that's it.
That's why they simply say their piece and quickly leave before anyone has time to respond. They know that if they stick around they will be shown for the fool they are.

He wouldn't have actually heard anything you told him anyway. No reason to waste energy guessing what you should have said

I wonder what would have happened if all 12-15 of you just started laughing at him...and didn't quit? :)

I believe one of the most important reasons for the 2nd amendments creation is to protect from an over reaching government like the one our fore fathers had escaped one. Now with that in mind, why would we want to leave the government better armed than the rest of us?

But at same time I am troubled by me not at least responding even in a simple remark.
3 or 4 quickie responses come to mind...
a. History and facts do not support your (his) statement at all.
b. Checks and Balance of power my friend.
c. Chairman Mao agrees with you. All power flows through the barrel of a gun. Therefore only the Communist party must own guns.
d. MUAHahahahahaha. Seriously?

Then get back to discussing whatever you were discussing like it never happened.

You could have told him to buy the mag so he could remove it from circulation if he was so concerned about it. Otherwise he should just move along and stop being a blow hard.

ugh. it happens. Its funny how anti's are perfectly comfortable belittling your opinions and views. I would never walk up to a stranger and tell them what think about anything really unless I was engaged, had a question or to make friendly small talk.

People like that are trolls. The only reason he has any opinion on the matter at all is to piss people off. Ignore them.

One pretty good opening comeback would be to say: "I used to feel that way."
Might not be true, exactly, but it would put him at a serious disadvantage, since it implies that there is more to the subject than he has thought of. Which, of course, there is.

Of course, if he's a super-aggressive type, he'd say "Yeah? And then what? You got real stooopid?"

But I doubt he'd recover. The point is, you can then deploy the more intelligent arguments: Multiple attackers (yes, it happens) and what is the point of limiting the capacity -- to stop murderers from murdering?

Magazine capacity does not cause crime. It doesn't even make it easier. The little nutcase at Sandy Hook had enough time to murder all those people even if he had used a single-shot rifle.

I've come to the conclusion that the anti-gun people aren't going to change their opinion no matter what facts you argue to them. The bottom line is they are simply just afraid of guns or of people having them. They are ignorant of guns and how they work and they are afraid of what they would do if they had one in their hands so they assume everyone would be equally dangerous with one. The idea that others are smarter than them is too hard for their ego to swallow. They can accept the idea that police or military have had special training they don't have so they are ok with them having them but regular folks like themselves couldn't possibly be safe. Its not logic that needs to be overcome its FEAR. Fear is an emotion, its irrational, and its a tough one to overcome. I don't think you were going to overcome his fears and ignorance at that table.

Case in point, I'm afraid of large spiders. No amount of logic about how safe it is to handle one is going to convince me to let you put one in my hand. Until I overcome my own irrational fear, it just isn't happening. The only way I'll do it is if someone talks me into it, puts it in my hand, and I experience for myself that its OK. Some people need to actually have a gun in their hands with some proper instruction for them to realize a gun really is just an inanimate object that is nothing to fear.

BTW, ain't no way in hell I'm holding a big spider. My skin is crawling just thinking about it.

Sir… SIR! You seem to be emotionally upset. Perhaps you should seek professional help so you can deal with your condition.

You really do not want to have a battle of wits with an unarmed individual; they only drag you down to their level of stupidity and beat you with experience

Tell him, "Good for you. You don't have to have it. We do."

At the time he was running his mouth I did in fact start to make comments to him but decided that he just was not worth the effort. You could almost hear the anger in his voice he was so set about his point. I raised my son and two other boys that live with us that it takes a bigger man to walk away from a confrontation than to stand toe to toe with someone. This was the first time any of us had ever saw the man before and hopefully it will be the last also. To all thank you for comments and reassuring me that I did in fact do the best thing by ignoring him.
