Looking for a small pocket gun.

Thanks to your advice (another thread) I have largely rejected the derringer idea.

Chanced upon a review of the Ruger SR22. The comments were over 80 percent positive.

What do you know about this pistol?

Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Not quite a "pocket" gun in the usual sense, but will fit in cargo pockets and those in some dress slacks. Will likely print in jeans, though.

I like the gun overall, but do not own one. I've handled them, and I have read the reviews. If I didn't already have several rimfires, and a pocket .32, I'd own one by now.

For a "pocket" .22, my go-to is a Taurus PT-22. But, for deep-conceal defense, my P32 is even smaller and thinner, and fires a (marginally) more potent and reliable round.

Whether or not the SR22 is for you depends on your intended use for it.

I'm with medwheeler on this,,,

I'm with medwheeler on this,,,
The shape of the pistol is wrong for a pocket pistol,,,
There are way too many sharp square corners for pocket carry.

It's a great little shooter,,,
I'm trying to wear mine out,,,
but I can't imagine carrying it in my pocket.

Let me rephrase that,,,
I can't imagine easily fishing that gun out of my pocket.

I recommend a slightly different gun than him though,,,
I like the polymer version of the PT-22 or PT-25,,,
They are the 22-PLY and the 25-PLY.

I use Federal Bulk and CCI Mini Mags in the 22-PLY,,,
In the 25-PLY I use FMJ exclusively,,,
Both have been ultra-reliable.

They are not a "pocket" gun in the strictest sense. When I walk the dog I stick one in the pocket of my hoodie to deter coyotes, it fits quite well. Even if it isn't a "pocket" gun, they are a kick in the butt to shoot.

You'll love the SR22, if it fits your hand. Many of the pocket guns are just too small for my hands. We have run around 2000 rounds through ours and have had very few issues and those were ammo related. I got one for the wife and both of us love its accuracy, weight, workmanship, dependability and easy to strip down. It shoots the bulk shells along with the expensive if you can find any.
It's a hoot to shoot!

Since you didn't say it had to be a 22 but would be a pocket gun, why not look at all the 380 true pocket options out there and get something that really is pocket size and is a far, far superior self defence cartridge?

The SR22 isn't small.
I carry one in my coat pocket around the place and it's a pocket full.

I think it's a great gun.
No telling how many Wal Mart 550 bulk packs have gone through this gun.

I liked my first SR22 so much I bought two spares.

I shoot something most every day (home range). I shoot the SR22 more than all my other guns put together.

For a small pocket gun something like the Ruger LCP or Kel Tec 32/380 might work for you (bottom left).

In a 22LR the Beretta 21A is a decent pocket gun.

It is not a hard gun to find, so I would not "rush out" to buy one. Take your time and do more research. I think it would be a great gun, but maybe to big for you "pocket" criteria.

May I suggest a Ruger LCR if you want a 22lr pocket gun. 8 shot revolver. I have one, great gun. Not ammo picky like most small 22 semi autos

I would echo TennJed, don't rush out and buy anything. Take your time, go to the store with the clothing you would like to carry with and do a trial fit with any number of small caliber pistols. That way you will know what feels comfortable and can easily be removed from the pocket, and then you can rent or borrow those models to determine what feels comfortable shooting. Making a good choice sure beats the heck out of a lifetime of regret.

I'd rush out and buy some 22 ammo first...if you find the ammo then by all means pick up the SR22.

It's fun to shoot, it's light, it runs like a champ. It is however, a little large for pocket carry.

Don't mean to echo, but it is a bit large to pocket. But wow is it an impressively great little pistol. Started my daughter on a purple one, and now me, my wife, and my daughter, all argue over who's turn it is to shoot it at the range.

One of my favorite pocket size .22s was a Beretta Model 21A. Well built and nicely finished it was one neat little semi-auto.

Only if you want to add some confusion into your training by using something with a safety that works exactly BACKWARDS from any other pistol with a frame-mounted safety.

I didn't realize that, and I am actually interested now. I started out shooting semi autos with S&W 3rd gens, berettas, and Ruger P series. I carry a Beretta PX4 and/or a Bersa Thunder. I prefer that, and wish more slide mounted safeties worked that way

Beretta Jetfire and a Bobcat, they are not what I'd call great pocket carry guns. I mean, they are small & fit in a pocket, but for the size and weight I can get something that is a much larger and more reliable hole-puncher than 25 auto or 22 long rifle. I guess that applies to the Taurus clones too.

First, it's big for a pocket gun. second, a .22 is a bad self defense choice. I carry a 9mm shield in my pocket, and like it. There are other, smaller options as well. I have a bodyguard 380 that is also nice, but still a bit underpowered.

Hey M2, whats the gun in the top right of your family photo? Thanks.
That's a CZ RAMI P.
Very nice gun. Too big and thick (double stack magazine) for pocket carry though.

Thumbs up! Why? Because I have one and have put close to 700 rounds through mine over half of which was Remington Golden Bullets which supposed to be the pits for most .22 LR fire arms.
At the NRA Convention in St Louis a couple years ago, the Ruger rep told me the SR 22P is reliable with everything but Remington. Mine might be the exception, but runs every kind of .22 I put through it.
Did I mention it is fun to shoot? Easy to run through a couple hundred at a time. My fingers actually got sore from loading so I bought some extra mags for it (it comes with two). Get one one and enjoy it, they are a blast (pun intended)!

Lucky you.

I haven't seen a single bulk pack for sale in Wal-Mart since these guns came out.
