Ruger Commander 1911 for ccw?

Plenty of people carry all steel full size 1911s, so I don't see why you couldn't. Standard caveats apply; make sure to test your gun/mag/ammo combination thoroughly before you stake your life on it, to make sure all the elements play nice together.

I carry a Commander myself, but mine's the lightweight version.

Just got one. Really nicely made, 100% reliable and quite accurate. You could do a LOT worse!

I am picking one up, "used" tomorrow, for little more than a para GI. I will give it a good once over. But the man lives here in my town, and seemed very animate that the gun has performed 100% with over 400 rounds through it.
He said not a mark on it, the CMD.

If you decide to carry the commander as your CCW, I would recommend the aliengear holster. For only $29.98, it beats the more expensive versions. I have 2 for my Stoeger Cougar compact and Glock 19. They are the most comfortable hoslter I have ever owned, and as many, I have a whole drawer of holsters that I have tried.

I just picked up a 9mm Combat Commander I plan having made into a 9x23 Win. gun for carry. I think they make great sense as a CC weapon. I currently carry either a 5" Government or a 4" Officer's/Compact, both in .45ACP, but the Officer's grip is just slightly too small for real comfort (and I hate giving up a round). The Commander seems like it will be just about perfect - the right sized grip for my hands, and a slightly more concealable slide length.

As for reliability, my personal opinion is that I need quite a few more than 400 rounds through it, but that's a good start! (Yeah, I know. Proving out a 9x23 Win for carry purposes is going to be expensive; but at least I reload.)

I carried one for a while. It isn't any easier to conceal than a full-size gun and I think the balance and performance is a little better with the full-size anyway.

Mine was problem-free with almost 200 rounds from 0-200 except one failure to eject which was my fault (limp-wristing). Other than that single round I never had a problem. It was pretty loose, but it shot great so I guess the frame to slide fit wasn't as important as the barrel to bushing fit (which was nice and tight).

I held off on my purchase. I am recalling carrying other full size an midsize 1911's and at my age I decided to give it more thought. It was a good deal at $600.00. But for $50 more I saw plenty on Armslist. And honestly I am torn between a CZ P06, and a commander. I started thinking about the weight again. I do carry all the time which would mean alternating guns indoors. "I can't see walking around the house with a 1911 all day" so I would have to use one of my mini 9's, where as with the CZ, I might be able to get away with it.
But I don't want to hijack the thread, If you only carry when you are outside, or have other guns, then it's a good choice.

As long as you can stand the weight commander length 1911s make fine CC weapons. Ideally they have lighter aluminum frames for carry, but like I said if the weight doesn't bother you go for it even though it's steel framed. Just make sure to get a really good belt and holster.

I am holding out for a Ruger Lightweight Commander 1911 in 9mm. To me the Com. length in 9mm is the ultimate 1911.

As far as I know, Ruger does not make a Commander. Colt does. The Ruger SR1911 is made in a Commander-like version, the SR1911CMD. It is offered only in steel, only in .45ACP. I haven't tried the Ruger and I'm sure it's an excellent gun, but it's not a Commander, and doesn't come in lightweight or 9mm configurations. Not yet anyway.

And just like we call short barreled AR-15's "M4 carbine" even though they are technically not, and we call all tissues "Kleenex" it's just a term used to describe the pattern of the gun. Sure, you're technically correct. The Ruger is a "Commander Clone" or whatever you'd want to call it. But c'mon.

Sorry but I'm unaware that 4 1/4 " 1911s are now being called Commanders generically. I call my 16" AR "M4 profile." But yeah, I call all tissues Kleenex.

I have a CMD, it has been completely reliable, I put 1000 rounds of HAP bullets thru it before it went into carry rotation, same load as the XTP's I carry. I haven't had any issues, I have close to 6000 down the pipe (had the pistol since September).

I carry it all day every day with a good belt and good OWB holster from CCS Gunwear. It conceals alright OWB but it also pretty comfortable and conceals great IWB with a holster from firearmholster.com.

That OWB and the Ruger make a real sweet rig!

Thanks. The belt and holster are very comfortable. The maker is local (central Washington) he's a real good guy, and does real nice work, everything on that rig is hand stitched.

rockhopper, I'm confused. Isn't the 9X23 Win. a 10mm case necked down to 9mm? Can the breechface of the slide be converted to the larger case head? Will the magazine accomodate the longer case?

The wood on the pistol when holstered is black and white ebony. The grips when the pistol is by itself are grips I borrowed to get numbers off of to make my own.

I have a few sets made up.

That's more than a little handy. You do professional grade work. Did you ever do work for others? Like bobbing or custom grips, etc?
What did you use to het the roll marks off the slide?
