Current production Remington shotguns

There are QC issues with all manufacturers in the gun world and many were caused by the run on guns that put high pressure on them to get the products out. We saw this in 2008 when the Royal Emperor was first elected but the level of panic buying that began in December 2012 was far worst then that. So not only are more guns being produced they are being produced faster and many are going into the hands of people who have little to no understanding of the weapon.

I have received hundreds of 870 the past year. I stripped each one and build my custom tacticals on them. So, I have each part in my hand three times, once when I strip it down, when I assemble it and when I break it down for cleaning after test fireing the weapon. I also sell hundreds of Remington police barrels, trigger plate assemblies, breech bolts and about any other part that goes into this weapon.

I have seen very little in the way of missed QC issues with them and only two in the past six months or so ( rim cut and set back barrel ring). I purchase hundreds of 870P parts to build my police tactical models and the same goes for them. The quanity of these guns I deal with gives me a more credible voice on this topic then someone who may post in about a negative expirience with the one 870 they purchased. I see far to many post where someone is slaming a Manufacturer and product because of one purchase or expirience.

I will note that that the few times I see an issue with a Remington product it seems to be barrels. I have had under cut rim cuts, missing detents, off set sight pedestals and even one barrel ring that was set back. However, these are rare issues over the past few years on a few barrels out of thousands of barrels I use on my builds or sell. I return them to Remington and they replace them.

The main reason I would avoid new 870 Police gun is the cost. I looked over older one in top shape with plastic cartridge holder on receiver for $350. The gun was in excellent overall condition. I do not know why new Police 870s with short mag, bead sight and hardwood stocks are so expensive to buy.
While I realize it's not 870 I picked up old parkerized Mossberg 500 with birch stock, seven shot magazine, SureFire 6p flashlight in steel magazine clamp for $150. The new Li Duracell batteries in flashlight alone are $10+. If one shops around they can get excellent HD gun for very little money.

I would not hesitate to buy another 870. I have used a bunch over the years, in several configurations, and ALL have always held up to the task. In the defensive shotgun class I took at Gunsite in October, one student was using one of their rental shotguns, which was an 870. It looked as though it had literally millions of rounds through it; the finish was long ago just about completely worn off, numerous scratches and dings on the stock, wear marks, etc. However, it kept going exactly as it should, year after year. I'm sold on that platform.

What's a fair price for a used 870 Police? A local store has some police trade-ins for $329, and I'm thinking of picking one up.

329 is a fair price for a used in good shape 870P or short barreled 870 Wingmaster. With cash you could probably get it for around 300.

I own 6 870s with born on dates between 1980 and 2010 and I would trust my life to any of them.

Not a Police Model, but I did recently purchase a Rem 870 Express Tactical. Quality, fit and finish was acceptable and the only upgrade has been to replace the "corn cob" fore end with a Magpul. That made all the difference in the world.

The model I have has a lengthened magazine tube and corresponding barrel modification instead of an extended mag tube.

She is in deer hunting mode right now but will return to HD mode after the season.

I have numerous 870's from various decades, and all have been 100% reliable. As for QC issues, I've come across a few over the years that weren't shinning examples of a typical 870. One such incident was when I bought a NIB LH 870 back in 1999 that had a bad barrel. It patterned way left, I mean way left. I switched barrels and the problem disappeared, so it can happen, and with any firearm manufacturer I think.

Can't speak directly concerning contemporary models. However, both of my Remington tactical shotguns purchased a few years back NIB failed to cycle after the first shot fired (using slugs). Problem being that both experienced FTE's due to the hulls being stuck in the chamber--Of course I thought maybe it was the ammo but I changed it resulting once again in FTE's. Pure and simple it turned out to be bad Remington QC at the factory in that they shipped guns out with bad chamber tolerances requiring me to polish both chambers with a drill and steel wool, after which, it was bang bang bang every time . YMMV but it's a known issue if you research the problem (encompassing both semis and pumps).

I've got a classic Wingmaster, nearly as-new, with a crack in the middle of the hallowed solid-metal trigger body. Some might say QC was spotty 50 years ago, because they weren't all perfect back then either.

I've also got a recent edition Express.

The Wingmaster is easier on the eyes, but the Express is my proven shooter and HD gun.

870P? For even money sure! Otherwise, just not that much into thumping my chest.

The Magpul is a solid addition to an 870; it makes it much easier to operate it one-handed due to the "hooks" on either end.

I bought a Marine Magnum earlier in the year and it is excellent! It was pricy, but worth it. If you have the means, I highly recommend them!

The Marine Magnum is my favorite. On the flip side is a Side Saddle six round carrier. This one gets a lot of use.

I picked up a "used, like new" parkerized 870 Police Magnum with wood stock earlier this year for a grand total of $175 OTD. Fantastic shotgun.

About 10 years ago I took some friends down the Colorado river on a duck hunt (I have a raft) on the last day of the year. We pulled over to an island to get cargo etc. re-arranged. One of my friends was about knee deep in the river holding the raft when he said "there's a shotgun in the river". Sure enough, he reached in and pulled out a battered Remington 870. Well, he took it home, disassembled and cleaned it up, replaced the stock and fore end, and the thing still shoots, every time. Now, the thing is a beater, but how do you possibly carp about a platform that can take that type of treatment and still function? Give me an 870 any day.

Marine Magnum gets my vote too. Only this time of shotgun can resist the heat, humidity of south Fla. Great sea water boat gun.
