I will be getting a new handgun soon. I'm looking for something that will be a concealed carry gun. I've read, watched videos, gone to stores to hold them, etc.

I'm leaning most heavily to the M&P40C. It feels best in my hands. It seems to sit perfectly between the two Glock models as far as rounds it holds. Overall it seems to be have more attention to detail in it's build (metal sites, etc). I like that I can put a larger magazine in it and that I could switch it over to 9mm if I wanted.
The trigger isn't bad but the Glock trigger does feel better.

If I go Glock, I can't really decide on the 23 or the 27. I know the Gen4 feels better in my hands but I don't know much about the differences. Outside of dry-firing, I've never fired a Glock. I know know about what it's felt like in the store.

The things that draw me to the Glock are all really related to it's popularity. There are so many aftermarket things for it... holsters, mags, etc. One of which is that the Glocks have 22LR conversion kits. The idea of being able to practice on the same pistol (obviously with a different recoil) at a much cheaper rate is a kind of attractive. On the other hand... the amount spent on a conversion kit could be spent on a whole new 22LR pistol.

As I said, I'm leaning to the S&W40C. Anything I should think about that I haven't? Any great arguments for the Glock to pull me over to the dark side? If I were to go Glock, which should I go... 23 or 27?

I'd go with the M&P40c IMHO, since it was made for the .40 and the Glock was made for the 9mm then modified for .40. If you go for Glock, get the 23. I would so get a M&P if they made one the same size as my Glock 19. Which ever one you get hope you enjoy it.

I traded a Glock 23 for a compact M&P a few years ago and the trade has been a mixed blessing. I traded because the SW felt so wonderful in my hands. A few months with it changed my mind. I find the back of the M&P Compact grip far too short for my tastes and it hits my medium-sized hand in the lower-center portion of my palm. The magazine with the pinky extention helps the hold on the front of the grip, but does nothing for the rear of the grip. This made the grip, on the whole, feel more like the grip on a pocket pistol. The rear of a Glock 23 grip is much longer, coming down the full length of my palm. On the plus side, the compact M&P feels GREAT with a full-size magazine equipped with a spacer. Of course, there goes the 'compact' part of the gun.

My M&P Shield with the extended magazine is actually longer at the grip's rear than the M&P Compact with either supplied magazine, making the Shield much easier for me to shoot accurately.

M&P or Glock?

I have Glock model 22 (full sized .40) I also have an M&P40c. When I bought the M&P I compared it to a G27 and no question, the M&P feels much better just holding it. Like you, I like the size of the M&P40c. At the range I've found that the nice feel of the M&P does not make it a better shooter, when shooting my G22 I never notice the grip, I'm focused on the sights and the target, the gun feels just fine when I'm shooting it. The M&P doesn't seem to feel any better when I'm focused on shooting. The trigger on my M&P was pretty bad, I spent $108.00 and an evening doing an APEX trigger job and the trigger is indeed much improved, though still not as good as my Glock. I'll keep the M&P but if I had it to do over again I think I'd pick up a G23 instead.

I have a July 2008 build MP40c that I like very much. It conceals easily in a leather IWB. The only thing not original is the striker - I called S&W a year or 2 after I got it, inquiring after I had read on the internet about some issues others had had with the original striker design breaking, possible from dry firing. They simply sent me a newer design and I installed that instead.

I like the looks, feel/ergos, and size (between the Glock 23 and 27) of the M&P compact. That did attract me to it initially.

As to the trigger, I suppose it is a bit notchy (the firing pin block and then the break/release) but I am not that familiar with the Glock's, nor, I suspect, am I much in the way of demanding as to triggers. I am aware of the APEX kit but have not yet decided to go down that path - not sure the stock trigger "bothers" me enough to justify it. Maybe eventually.

Here are a few things you probably already know due to your choices...

1. Reliability - both the Glock and the S&W have excellent track records, I'd give the edge to Glock based on personal experience
2. Accuracy - both are very good in this department
4. Caliber - the largest you can comfortably control in a defensive scenario - 40 is good
3. Availability of parts - both are very good, the Glock parts are very cheap and due to the popularity of Glocks there are a lot around. Check on the S&W parts, I don't know much about their cost and availability. If you find that there are parts that you can only have installed by the Manufacturer then ditch that choice
4. Simplicity of Design - the Glock really shines here, you can completely detail strip a Glock with just a simple punch. More complicated design = more failure points
5. Shootability - since you've started with good choices, which one do you shoot best? Only time will tell...

Bottom line...I don't think you can make a bad choice between the two...

Not from me. I would far rather buy the M&P40c and if you decide you got'a have a larger version down the road you have the full size 4 1/4" and the 5" CORE versions. Looking at the size of the compact and g27 are very close with the m&p being 1/4" longer and 1/8" higher with the flat bottom mag. Like glock it will use the full mags too.

If you ever decide to up great the trigger function that's when you will find glocks after market is waaay higher priced that apex for the M&P line.

From my few point the M&P line feels better in the hand over a glock grip but the compact is a little heavier than the g27. nether one is a pocket pistol so that couple oz's should not matter. Last most gun shops sell the M&P compacts for 50 dollars less than g27.

I have had all 3, the glock trigger is much better. If you want to spend money on aftermarket parts, then the M&P is fine.

Well the newest M&P's have had some trigger group upgrades and if you still feel the trigger needs to be better than s your call as they do shoot in with rounds fired. Not everyone things much of glocks trigger ether.

If you value "clever design" its a no brainer: Glock. If you're the kinda guy that likes to keep his gun pretty spotless, Glock makes it REAL easy to do this. It takes maybe 30 seconds to detail strip a Glock slide, no joke. You can get in there and clean out your extractor, striker channel, all that stuff for an extra 5 minutes over the time you'd normally spend cleaning. The M&P????? Forget it. Take it down once and you'll never do it again. Maybe people think this is no big deal, but check how dirty your striker and extractor get after 500 rounds.

I've heard that SW cleaned up the trigger on the M&P, but I have no experience with the newer models. When it originally came out, however, the trigger was awful.

The Glock feels like it came from guys that actually care and take pride in their engineering. The M&P, at least the earlier models, feels like it came from a corporation that needed an answer to the Glock (but not a direct copy that would get them sued, like the Sigma). Do the right thing, get the Glock.

That said, the M&P is an extremely popular gun and people seem to really like them. If the above points don't resonate with you, you'll prolly love the thing like most people that bought them.

What fits your hands? Go to a gun store, close your eyes, and 'aim' both guns with your eyes closed. Which one is more or less on target when you open your eyes? The one that is more or less on target would interest me if I were you.

Just a point of clarification...modifying the Glock trigger is VERY CHEAP...Way cheaper than what it would cost for the Apex Trigger on the M&P.

I've spent considerable time with both I love everything about the M&P but in my hands the G27 gen4 is much more comfortable and accurate.

Rent them both, see which you shoot better.

Have had my Glock 27 Gen 4 a few weeks now after having a 19 and 23 in gen 4 version.

The 27 is a little snappier than the 23, IMO but it's impressed me at the range every time. I bought a 9mm conversion barrel and kept 2 of my Glock 26 mags to use with it, and that's been fun to shoot as well.

Nice thing about the Glock 27, buy a 9mm conversion barrel, or a 357 Sig barrel, and you can shoot three calibers out of the same gun though I have no need for a 357 barrel, it is nice having the versatility.

Here's what sold me on Glock over M&P.

SELF-SMITHING.

There isn't anything I can't do to a Glock. M&P - No dice.

Other than that, the M&P is better than Glock in a lot of ways.

Just out of curiosity, what on the M&P can you not do? The Glock and M&P are pretty similar as far as field strip and working on them.

Not that I am an expert at working on either firearm.

To reiterate an earlier post, these two are, by all measure and comment so close in design and implementation that you need to rent both and do some back and forth comparing looking for what best fits and works for you. Try some closed-eye pointing (please open your eyes before firing) and the like. I assume you will find the answer.

Technically, nothing, I suppose. Glocks are much easier to work on. Now, the M&P is close, but nothing beats a Glock when it comes to availability of parts and ease of self-smithing your pistol.

I've been carrying the M&P40C for about a year now and really like it.... Its all I've ever carried so I can't give any comparisons to other manufacturers... I carry it with the magazine without the pinky extension so as to make it that much more concealable. I carry it IWB at about 4 oclock.. I often think if the gun was a tad more thin that it would carry better, but I think it would adversely affect the handling of the gun... JMO... It shoots great with plinking ammo but as with most guns can get a little snappy when you load um HOT!!! Great gun overall and I'll probably add a few more of the M&P line to my arsenal in the future..

Been carrying an M&P40c for awhile now. I have no complaints at all and 0 failures. I bought it over the Glock because it felt better in my hand. I have somewhat large hands and the short grip did take a little getting used to, but in my case it was equal to the Glock that regard. However, with the large backstrap insert it is very easy for me to get a secure firing grip on it. M&P gets my vote.

Update: I ended up ordering an M&P40c. It feels better and the price was right. Only problem is I ordered it from PSA so who knows when I'll get it :)

Thanks for the help guys.

With the M&P you'll want to install the Apex USB to smooth out the trigger action. (The rough trigger comes from the friction on the stock sear block...). If you don't like the M&P two piece trigger you can also install the Apex aluminum trigger. You don't need to spend tons of money on a complete Apex trigger kit, unless you really want to. Both the Glock and the M&P are easy to work on or adjust to your taste. They're both great guns and you can't go wrong with either. Hell buy both.

You can't go wrong with any one so choose what works best....I shot everything I could rent, borrow, or buy this last Summer and chose the Glock 26 becasue the G27 was a bridge too far in recoil for me. But it'd be a fine choice.

The M&P was excellent as well but I simply shot the Glock better by a far margin right out of the gate...I liked the trigger and "feel" of the Glock over the M&P especially. My suggestion is to shoot them both (all) before you write an opinion or preference in stone. Then make yer choice and remember you can always choose the other later if it doesn't work out.

Guns aren't like "Significant Others" in that they don't get jealous, You don't have to choose one for life, and it's not an earth shattering change to dump one and go with something that suits you better later on.

Shoot 'em then choose.

If the trigger is the only thing keeping you away from the Smith, get a drop-in kit from Apex. I have an M&P 9c, same size as the .40, and will swear by it. Handles and functions like a dream and is more accurate than I ever will be. And for me, the Smith fits my hand, the Glock feels like a brick.

And if you are worried about aftermarket accessories and such, more and more of those are coming out by the day.
