Kimber Ultra CDP II 45 ACP Good/Bad?

I am a 45 ACP type with a love of the early Colt 1911 guns. Being a dinosaur by nature I am not real familiar with the newer guns like the Kimber Ultra. I am looking at a Kimber Ultra CDP II at a price of $900 out the door. The gun comes with a Galco holster and extra rosewood grips and a few other things. The holster being about a $70 flavor. I haven't seen the extras but did feel out the gun yesterday. Like new in box, I was told only a few rounds through it and it looks it.

I am considering it as a carry gun and as much as I seem to like the gun and the price seems good my knowledge of these things is about a -3 (Negative Three) on a scale of 1 to 10. I would appreciate some input from anyone who has one and is familiar with the gun. Good, bad or indifferent. Trying to decide if I want to pull the trigger on this thing.

Mine has been flawless. At work, it is the Kimber or an Ed Brown for carry. The Kimber gets carried a lot and after years it still looks like new.

Years ago Kimber had problems with some of them that had external extractors. I believe all of those were recalled or replaced. The slide on the model you want should look just like a standard 1911.

I shoot my reloads and factory rounds in my gun and it is not fussy at all.

Do get mags with rounded (preferably plastic) followers, not the old style sharp edge version that came with the gun. They may chip the feed ramp of the gun after the last round was fired, and rounded followers eliminate that issue. Wilson mags also give you an extra round.

Recoil spring replacement is required maintenance so, after a few thousand rounds, I use my old one for the range, and a new one for carry.

Thank you 340 PD. Especially for the tips like the take down tool. I had heard about the magazines. This gun looks brand new. I will give it a good look over and think I'll pull the trigger and go for it.

I've never owned a CDP model but I did have a Ultra Carry ll. Basically the same gun but not as fancy as the CDP model. Mine was awful. I couldn't get it to run consistently with any type of ammo and even after more than one trip back to Kimber it still would not run. I would day avoid the Kimber or any 1911 under 4.25 inches. That's just my opinion based on my experience. YMMV.
 
I have a Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry that has been perfect out of the box (I did replace the stock sights though). Bought it to replace my Kimber Ultra Raptor !! that was flawless, and is the one gun that I have regretted selling.

340 PD, thanks for the link to the takedown tool. Just ordered the long one for my Ultra, and the 4" for my wife's Pro.

I bought the gun. I figure if it doesn't perform I can pretty much sell it for what I have in it. Came with the holster, 3 magazines and a two magazine pouch.

Ah the irony as I was just sitting here thinking I should head over to the range this morning. I guess I'll see for myself what this little gun can do (or not do). I'll get a few pictures up later today.

Took it to the range and the little gun did OK. I ran 100 rounds of CCI Lawman 230 grain ball through it. Several magazines as fast as I could pull the trigger and the gun had zero stoppages. I forgot to drag along any hollow points. Next trip hollow points factory and hand loads. The little gun also shot very accurate, well more accurate than I can shoot anyway. I tried all 3 magazines and everything went well.

I was also shooting a Colt Combat Commander and at one point shoved a Colt magazine in the little gun. The magazine went in and locked up fine but... when the slide went forward the little gun failed to strip and chamber a round. I did not take the time and energy to really look at it and the why.

All in all I am happy with the new little pistol. I like the holster also. :)

I am using Wilson Mags with Aluminum bases with mine, as well as a Kimber Pro-Tac mag. Runs like a champ. I also changed out the slide catch and thumb safety with Wilson parts. I modded the thumb safety.

Try the Remington Golden Sabers. They are some of the best feeding JHP you can get, although mine has run everything I have tried, including the 200 Gr Gold Dots in it right now.
 
I've had two Ultra CDPs so far (plus two stainless Ultra Carrys, the poor sister). All have worked great. Only wish I had kept the ones I sold.

For that price, you stole it. Enjoy.
 
I owned a 3in. barrel model about 4 years ago.
I was "pretty" but in went back to Kimber twice and I sold
it after it came back the second time.
Mine was not a reliable gun for self defense.
