Hey all,

My next handgun is going to be one that I can slip into a loose pants pocket to carry it from time to time. Originally I was set on a J Frame. I've never had one and always wanted one so I thought there was no other to match it. Well I've started looking at other options and I've decided to keep my mind open and check out lots of different handguns and then pick after handling a lot of the choices.
Some of the others I have started to check out are the Kahr PM9, the Walther PPS, the S&W Shield, Ruger LCR, SIG P938.

One thing I'd like to know is what handgun do you all prefer for this type of carry? Have you tried others? I'd like to hear your choice and the reasons for picking it. If you have pics of it, with your carry rig, how about posting them?

Any info you care to share on your choices would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

I went with a Ruger LCP for the simple fact that it's small in all dimensions, particularly thickness. I like the pistol overall after putting 100rds through it. Next, I'm going to pick up one of these:

To carry like this:

Sig P238.

It's heavier than the competition, and it's single action (which you may not like), but it'll outshoot the competition any day of the week.

That said, I do love my J-frame, however it's harder to conceal and doesn't work so well in some of my pants.

Either J frame, CM9 or lately my favorite has been my .45XDs. All pocket carry.

I used a S&W bodyguard in tropical climates with shorts and Hawaiian type shirt. This felt great, disappeared like it was never there.

I'm selling it if you are interested.

LCP. I also have an LCR and had a 642 in the past, but the small revolvers never really fit my pockets anywhere near as well as the LCP, and just as importantly, the LCP's flat profile allows it to draw out much more smoothly so I can draw on the target much faster.

I've tested my LCP with numerous types of ammo and it has never failed, even when (purposely) filled with pocket lint.

I have a TCP. Never had an issue. Best trigger out there for a pocket .380 plus the slide locks on empty.

I have it everyday either as a primary while at work or as a back up to my full size carry.

The smallest I have for pocket carry is a KelTec P3AT. After that it gets a little bit larger, going between a S&W Model 638 and a Kahr PM9.

Ruger LCR now and a Beretta Pico when it arrives...Actually I can do a Glock 26 in a pants pocket or my Beretta Px4 subcompact but need to find a decent holster for the Glock.

No carry without holster for me except maybe a revolver.

VooDoo

I've pocket carried Glock 26, Colt Mustang, S&W BG.380, S&W 442 & 438 and a Colt Detective Special. I pretty much have either the DS or 438 in my pocket 80-90% of the time now, in a Mika pocket holster. With that holster, I find them easier to conceal and to draw than semis. And when it absolutely, positively has to go BANG! the 2nd time, only a revolver will do.

You may have a perfect grip on your LCP at the range where you may only get attacked by a piece of paper, but you can't guarantee that if you really need your gun.

I pocket either a 642 or a CM9, both in a Desantis pocket holster. Since I wear cargo shorts 51/52 weeks a year, it is just easier that way for me. If my budget was bigger, I would give some serious consideration to the Rohrbaugh or the Boberg

G42 is huge. Not a pocket pistol if you wear normal jeans. Maybe with slash cut pockets.
G42 is a subcompact full of fail.

Ruger LCP in deSantis pocket holster. Tried my LCR, but just not small enough or as comfortable as the LCP.

For those few times when pocket carry is the best or only alternative, I'd recommend a S&W 642. For me, this makes sense based on the weight savings, ability to fire while still in the pocket, and the expected reliability that a 642 offers.

Pocket carrying an auto would not be my first choice.

I currently carry a Nano and I love it. It's just barely on this side of the "too big for pocket carry" line.

If I had my way and money was no issue, I would have gone with a Boberg or an R9.

A safe pocket carry pistol should have:

1) no exposed hammer or cocking piece to get caught in the pocket

2) no levers or buttons that project outside the main width of the gun

3) a hefty double-action pull, in case you get a finger caught in the trigger guard trying to dig it out

4) rounded edges, so it doesn't chew up your pocket and/or leg

My LCP fails #4; almost all modern pocket pistols are blocky and have sharp edges. It's the style, I guess. There are some shops pushing "melt" (stupid term) 1911s, which have all the edges blended over, but I don't view a 1911 as a pocket carry candidate.

I used to carry a variety of Smith J-Frame reolvers. Then I went to a Ruger LCP. From that, to a Smith Body Guard. I finally found a pistol that is extremely accurate and easy to shoot, the Sig 238. I use the leather Sig pocket holster that completely covers the safety and the trigger. Great gun if you can live with a .380 and cocked and locked single action. I think the polymer Colt Mustang might also be a good bet.

The Sig P938 doesn't treat me well when shooting multiples against the clock. Too much recoil and I am not getting any younger.
