Is there a way to make my 10/22 not semi-auto, but more like what you see in the olympic type rifles?

Shoot Thunderbolt in it
Hahahaha!

Are you fitting it with a silencer and want to keep it a little more quiet?

You can hold the bolt closed with your thumb. To me, even with the bolt held closed the 10/22 still is not as quiet as a bolt-action rifle.

You can also build a bolt-stop that fits behind the 10/22's bolt handle that will keep it from opening. It would just wedge in between the bolt handle and the rear of the ejection port. You would have to remove it every time you cycle the gun, though.

Replacing the recoil spring with one of heavier poundage would be a start if you could find one that would fit and allow opening of the action.

Perhaps you could either replace or attach to the factory handle an extended "T" shaped charging handle. I don't know how much steel would be need for enough mass to keep the action closed. Perhaps the vertical member of the "T" could be filled with lead. I have no idea how much lead would be needed but if more than a pound it would not be very aesthetically pleasing. Doing it this way would eliminate the need to modify the receiver and give you an easy to grab charging handle for fast cycling. I am too lazy to look up how much mass is need to keep a 22LR breech closed but there are resources online to calculate it. Good Luck.

Update: If I am understanding the chart on this link correctly, a reasonably sized "T" shaped charging handle may work. It depends on what you consider "reasonably sized".

Sorry to bu:tt in but would holding the bolt closed with your thumb hurt? I have fairly strong medium-sized hands.
I will chime in with rcmodel and say from first hand experience that it doesn't hurt with subsonic ammo. As he said, letting the bolt pick up a little momentum might not be pleasant, but as long as you're holding it closed from the start, no problem.

As a lefty I find it really easy to stick my right thumb against the bolt handle while otherwise holding the rifle normally.

How about a bent clothes hanger 'Hook' from the barrel band back to the bolt handle?? :D

Thanks for the replies so far, guys.

The main reason is I'd prefer not having dirty 22lr ammo dust being blown back into the receiver, . . . and having the ability to keep it from the semi-auto mechanism [at times] would be nice. So I may try to come up with a block that will keep it closed. I'll look at the other options as well.

Why bother, just spray some Break Free in the action when it gets dirty. I only ever cleaned mine when it started to malfunction, which wasnt very often, maybe once a year.

ruger semi auto

22 cb longs will cycle reliably the action as bolt action. Not enough
Power to open the action and ruger mag cycles cab well. Been using to dispatch varmints in backyard for years.

Shoot some very subsonic ammo, like CCI quiet. Not enough kick to cycle the action so you have to charge it every time.

Shorts won't feed right, ^ will work though.

I just don't see this. The whole point of buying a semi auto is because it IS a semi auto. If you want a bolt action repeater or even a single shot rifle then sell the Ruger and buy what you want instead. Or simply add a nice bolt action repeater or single shot match level rifle to the collection so you have nice examples of two styles of rimfire rifle.

I know that we often do things like this just because we CAN. But in this case there's other potential increases in accuracy to be had by going with any number of bolt action repeaters or single shot rifles.

I have a few 10/22's that will out shoot a lot of bolt action .22's, I think I might even have some stock ones that will out shoot a stock 77/22.

My Clark custom will shoot 1/2" at 50 yds, nothing wrong with semiauto for accuracy.

I MAY sell it. The problem is that it is customized so I would loose money on it. Raptor stock, Clerke bull barrel [threaded], Volquartzen trigger, Tungsten Cerekote....

Also, I do have a bolt action Marlin [with the tube feeding] and an old Marlin 39a.

This looks like just the ting to make really quiet subsonic shots with a sound suppressor yet still be autoloading by default.

I've seen another bolt lock design that seemed tedious. The Colossic looks very interesting. Does anyone have a better photo of it than on the web page?

If you just like the idea of a straight pull 10/22, who could fault you for that? I was kind of fascinated by the Biathlon rifles myself, so I see the appeal.

As for me, I was visiting a friend over the past few days and we burned up 500 rounds of Thunderbolt in my 10/22 with no failures of any kind. The rifle started relatively clean but sure isn't now. I think a good 10/22 with half decent ammo will run like a sewing machine, even without much maintenance.
