I don't like the government buying up so much ammo in principle, but it strikes me as hypocritical by us in the gun community to make fun of the (admittedly often pathetic) hit/shot ratios of law enforcement in general, than criticize them for buying to much training ammo. If they're buying lots of hollow-points, that's another matter, they don't need those for training other than to validate their individual weapons.

With all the attorneys employed by the Feds, they protect themselves from vicarious liability by having the armed Federal agents shoot the same ammo for qualification as they carry on duty ....so they don't have to explain the difference to a jury .Just one less thing for them to have to explain....AND it's not their money paying for it!

This merely states that there are to many employees guarding the home people and that they aren't nearly getting enough firearms training to be realy proficient.
An in our country, every LEO gets abouth 180 rnds/year for training, which is less then my 14 year old daughter shoots every week.

I oversaw the firearms training for a 70+ law enforcement agency. Considering we qualified twice a year, we would go through about 20,000 minimally. Some PD's qualified 4+ times a year.

As a police academy instructor, for basic academy firearms training, each recruit was responsible to bring a minimum of 1200 rounds of handgun ammo for training and qualification. Each academy class had 40+ recruits and the classes were 3 times a year.

Multiply that by 12 for the number of police academies in the state..........

BTW ,,,in my heyday I shot close to a 1000 rounds a week myself............

Why the shortage?

Im a new shooter, picked up a gun for the first time last Feb. I now have probably 8000 rds of 9mm (though I've started loading those for myself now), 4000 rds of 380 and 4000 rds of 223.

And how many me's out there do you think their are? I bet Im not the only one that got spooked into buying guns and ammo by the current administration in office. I figured if they could ram healthcare through without bipartisan support, why not a firearms ban of some sort?

Misunderstood or even blatantly false: "The Government is buying up ammo!"

This is where the fear and panic starts - the OP presents credible evidence the government is actually reducing their spending, and yet the mantra is repeated and perpetuated without any effort to assimilate new information.

Or, to put it more directly, ignore the facts and keep buying ammo, we're enjoying our hysteria and don't want to face the truth. It's not as comfortable knowing our government is actually trimming ammo purchases. We'd rather believe the lie.

Ok. Free country. Do what you like.

As for "I don't like them shooting hollow points!" I could go into a lot of discussion about the myths of the "devastating impact," the Geneva Convention, etc. All of which would be worthless, because 1) they aren't "devastating," and 2) the Geneva Convention has nothing to do with it - it was the Hague agreements. The real gun bunny reason to shoot the ammo you would use on duty is that you are training to shoot the ammo you would use on duty. Not cheap white box fodder known for it's propensity to malfunction. You train exactly the way you would fight, a serious reason why the .22 adapters never really caught on in the AR15 crowd. Those who have them now don't find them real useful, do they?

But, don't let the facts get in the way of a good panic, get out there and keep spreading misinformation and outright lies. It's the only way you and your buddies can justify all the silliness of lining up to buy three boxes of .22 on Tuesday morning.

"Oh, look, honey, a line of old guys wearing the same hat you threw away and those cute tactical range purses!" "Yeah, now you know why I got rid of the hat. Tell me again why we had to be here this early? Let's go down this aisle."

DHS is huge in its scope...huge. Anyway, one other thing we need to consider is these, even though less ammo is bought than previous years as pointed out by others, could be pushed by the ammo manufactures Federal congressional representatives/senators. It's not like Federal projects don't get pushed this way every year. How many bases...equipment manufactures...both military and non-military are pushed through for a congressman's home district. There is also the use it or lose it in next years budget mentality. Applying common sense need/usage rationale to government purchases...c'mon guys.

It was common practice back in the day when Customs, Border Patrol and INS were separate to take whatever old ammo left over from the previous contract to the "dump" or the local gun store or home. The abuse was criminal if you ask me.
It is criminal.

If a DHS employee gets caught selling service issued ammo, including spent brass, they can disciplined, terminated, and/or prosecuted.

It is a serious matter and it has happened a number of times.

Taking issued ammo home, however, is a bit of a different story, since it is still under the control of a DHS employee and is still to be used for its intended purpose (ie practice or duty carry).

To be realistic, DHS should shoot far more that they do today.

Just left Wal-Mart here in west Houston and they have an almost full cabinet of everything. A bought the last two boxes of Blazer 22LR @ $2.47/box of 50. The guy that opened the cabinet said there was more of the .22 in the back and he'd be stocking it in the morning. If you're interested say so and I'll let you know the details.

@patatohead

congrats! 16,000 rds in acquired in less than 1 yr.

Do you actually plan on shooting some of that stuff or are you just hoarding?

anyway - I'll laugh when ammo is back to "reasonable" levels and all those folks stockpiling sit on their .40cent+ / rd 9mm ammo and .80cent /rd .223 ammo....

just got back home from Walmart today and they had 6 boxes of 9mm Tula for $10 / each (50rds) and PLENTY of .40 SW for $32 / 100rds (Remington)

i hope you feel good now. You went and ruined a perfectly good conspiracy rant. :D

It's none of your god dang business what he's doing with it. It's his.

My god, I'm sick of people acting like anyone with more than 2 boxes of ammo is hoarding. Stop crying and whining. Go buy some yourself. Can't find any? Can't afford any? Not my freaking problem. Grow the hell up and stop being jealous because the other kid on the playground has a toy you want.

Many of us are equally tired of hearing conspiracy theories about how the government is causing an ammo shortage from the people that stand in line every day to buy as much ammo as they can.

Ya know, almost all the threads concerning ammo shortage and guberment conspiracies miss the real point. Sure, lots more people are buying more ammo. Lots more are buying guns and practicing. More and more States are becoming Shall-Issue. Our guberment has wars on several fronts. not to mention keeping their own supplied in cased them bullets need to be used against...who? :uhoh:

HOWEVER . . . The root cause of the ammo shortage is the consumer - US.

Has anyone wondered WHY individuals are buying ammo in record numbers??? Trust me, it ain't 'cause of CCW, recreational shooting, or scalping... Yeah, all of that has some impact...

The truth is that people are SCARED of the future. I know this isn't a political forum, but that is the truth about the ammo shortage. People want to be able to defend themselves against the evil coming for them or their stuff. Whether it's the guberment, the thugs driving by their home, or the masses of unemployed.

I am tired of that as well.

I believe that the majority of it is precisely that.

Yep, too many gunowners buy into the "...... is going to take your guns" stuff. This run on ammunition is being driven by gun rights organizations, fringe media outlets, far out bloggers, gun show promoters, mom and pop gunstores and online ammo sellers. All these folks stand to gain when ammunition supplies are scarce and prices high.

That is barely over 2 bricks a month??????

What gets me in threads like these is that some people obviously buys guns just to have them and not shoot them. If you think 1000 rds of 22 a month is too much to shoot, then you don't like shooting guns

I was in a Walmart several months ago, Chief was at the SG counter, looking for ammo so his officers could qualify. No joy. Didn't have what I needed either. Double no joy.

I asked the Chief why all the force had was duty ammo, and he said the unanticipated shortage hit them too. The counter guy said he had lines waiting for trucks to be unloaded at 8:00 P.M., whenever they delivered. They had family members in line buying the max. I asked why, and the Chief said gun shows.

I asked if any of the hoarders were employees, and the counter guy said no. Ahem.

Stocks are lookin' good for what I need now.

Sounded like a joke to me. Lighten up, Francis.

@ 17 yrs ago a local Officer was retiring. I got 600 rds of ammo dirt cheap. He said "i never got around to going to range" He said he had given the bulk of it away already but found this when cleaning his desk.....

Didn't read like a joke to me, Bertha.

And judging by the 42098574895734985743985743859475940u8598475398457 threads and posts on here with people getting their panties in a wad every time someone buys more than what they deem is the acceptable amount of ammo, I still don't think it was.

And his post had to be edited for language by a moderator. My money is that he didn't use profanity as a joke.

I just looked at his post history and it is chock full of posts whining and complaining about hoarders and not being able to find ammo on the shelves. But hey Ethel, you're probably right and he's just joking.

I planned on sitting on it until more hatched...

Seriously, I wanted to make sure I had plenty in case one of these nutz in charge decides to ban ammunition/firearms one of these days...sorry if that offends you. Ive got a good idea, dont worry about what i have, worry about what you have.

the "i know what's best for you" attitude is what gets us in most of this gun/ammo ban mess in the first place. You think everyone should be alotted the same little amount of ammo if they're not shooting enough? Sounds like Socialism or something to me. I've actually worked pretty hard acquiring what I have, I did the work for it so i guess it's mine.

+1 for Arkansas Paul btw :)
