Maybe they're saying the higher-than-intended velocity might lead to early expansion?

Yep - if its been designed to expand at short barrel velocities, its going to perform like a frangible at rifle velocities

I'm guessing you would get a similar effect to a vmax, probably a lot of hide damage, splattering on the entry wound, good probability of wounding if you hit bone.

At 175 yards velocity would compare to muzzle velocity of the pistol barrel. I am guessing the bullet would perform as designed.

It says on the back label on the box it is designed for use in short barrel revolvers.

I have shot squirrels with the Gold Dot out of a SW51 with a 3.5 inch barrel. Performance was very much like that of high-speed hollowpoints out of .22 long rifle cartridge from a rifle. Expansion of regular magnum hollow point bullets from such a short barrel rarely show expansion. The Gold Dots were devasting due to a bullet designed to expand at handgun magnum velocities. Perfect hunting cartridge!

The nice thing about guns and ammunition is that it's always fun to see how they actually perform under whatever circumstances you can dream up.

I say give it a go and see what happens.

Given the way Gold Dot bullets are designed, I can very easily imagine that the bullet would fragment under radically higher velocities. And an almost 80% increase above the design velocity DOES constitute "radically higher velocities" in my book.

I've never tried these bullets, and quite frankly don't see much point for what I have. But anything with the phrase "Gold Dot" after is automatically makes my ears perk up. I carry Gold Dot in 230 grain .45 ACP and 115 grain 9mm as my personal protection round.

I just bought a box of the Gold Dots. I'm looking forward to trying them out.

The Hornady Critical Defense 45grain ammo in my NAA 1 5/8" barrel tended to tumble. I had high hopes for this ammo. I'm sure it is premium stuff, but it didn't work for my gun.

I just picked up a CZ 455 in 22 mag. Gold dot SB was all I could find. Use will be plinking and varmint shooting.

What were the results of he ammo in rifle? Any accuracy issues at the higher velocity? I would expect the would come apart pretty quick, perfect for ground squirrels and jack rabbits, maybe not so much for rock chucks, badgers and similar sized varmints.

I have shot the old Federal 30 grain Sierra JHP, and it is very accurate & explosive out of a Winchester 9422M and a Colt SA revolver.

But I have no experience with the new Gold-Dot ammo.

So, you do have all that is necessary to provide the answer to your question for the rest of us with .22 WMR rifles and handguns.

Shot a coon at about 15yards using the gold dot out of a 4" Rov. I rolled it with each hit (8).He was still trying to leave the area until I finished him with my 9mm. I was not able to cut him up. But it looked as if only 2 went thru and left exit wounds.

Ill hopefully be out tomorrow sighting in. NOt sure how soon to find out how it reacts on small game. I pass on the news good or bad either way.

that sucks, that coon should have been dead, dead, dead after a few shots.

Works OK in my PRM30. Accurate, functions 100%, have not had a chance at coyote or other critters yet. If that racoon took 8 of them and kept on ticking, he must of found a stash of crack cocaine or PCP and ate it. Beware of doped up varmints!!!!



Just Another Old Doggy, Don

IN my NAA Minimag, they show good performance against thin-skinned vehicle targets and jugs of water. The Hornady Vmax is a good baseline.

I bought A savage 92F 22 mag A couple of years ago and bought several different brands of ammo to try out. The gold dot ammo was the most accurate in it (if you call 2.5-3in groups at 100yd accurate) followed by the 30 grain Hornady which shot close to the same as the gold dot. The other ammo was all over the place and the FTX 45gr stuff tumbled its way to the target.
I did shoot A coyote with the gold dots at around 60 yards in the vitals. The bullet was found under the hide on the opposite side and had mushroomed nicely. It ran around 40 yards and piled up. About the same distance as one I shot with the new .17 HH.
