My LGS called me and let me know the R51 had just come in. They received six for the first shipment. They should be popping up everywhere now I'd assume.

Picked mine up and I have to say I really like it so far. I've never done the guinea pig, 1st round tester before, but I liked the idea and looks of this pistol so much I had to have one.

Feels really great in the hand and points beautifully. Here's a couple pics compared to my PPK/s.

Anything else or other comparisons you guys want to see, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Can't wait to get it out and shoot it now.

Yeah, I hit the magic new post button at just the right time. You were at the top of the list.

Do you have an XDs or Shield for comparison?

I don't. I have a full size Walther P99AS or Walther P5. I also have a Makarov, Ruger MkIII, or the PPK/s or PPK (.32).

Wow, it's pretty much exactly the same size, weight and feel as the Mak. The grip on the R51 is about a quarter inch shorter. The feel very similar in the hand and point the same too! It's about the best comparison yet.

Pics coming in a sec.

That's the pressing question for sure. How well it shoots.

Having longer fingers I'm also curious how well the grip safety releases. I had trouble with the XD9 I had.

Haven't shot it yet, just got it a few hours ago and won't get to shoot it today. Maybe tomorrow or Friday though! I'll let you know.

The grip safety feels fine and doesn't bother me at all.

Here's the Mak comparison pics.

You know, just a few weeks ago, I posted a thread looking for something the size and shape of a Makarov, but (1) ambidextrous and (2) with an ammunition size I can find in local stores. This sounds like it might be perfect for me. I'll let you be the first-production run guinea pig, but I'll be watching your thoughts on this gun VERY closely.

Thanks!

Very nice PPK/S. They look so much better when you put wood grips on them.

Thanks for the pics of the comparisons with the R-51. I wish it had been a smaller pistol, but I'll still give it a go.

*sigh* Anyone else wishing the R51 had a polished/blued finish as an option? That Mak looks too classy next to it. A shiny finish and some wood grips would dress up the Remington very nicely, I plan on doing something like that when I get a chance to pick one up.

That said, the "Remington matte" finish looks nicer than it did in earlier display model pics I saw, where color was uneven (oil smudges?) and it appeared to be chipping at the edges. I called my local Cabela's and was fed some story about the pistols being delayed/withdrawn due to "legal stuff" (c'mon guys, you have all day; come up with something better than that) and that they had no idea when they'd be back. Second odd excuse/explanation in as many phone calls --whatever.

More importantly, there appear to be at least a couple examples of some sort of issue out of the box out there, in which the slide is extremely hard to rack after a short distance (obviously the locking block is binding as it tries to rise, though that's apparently beyond the deductive reasoning of the posters I was reading) as well as peening of the frame lug on the same gun (probably the same issue, with the block binding on the burr).

I'm not entirely convinced it's peening as alleged, as opposed to machining burrs. If Remington is anything like the company I work at, tooling is usually not replaced when dull, but when it breaks or makes out of spec parts. Combine that with some dude not dehorning the part sufficiently after machining, and you have a lip on the frame that can snag stuff.

I read some chatter about there already being a recall/delay on this issue, but if there was any legitimacy whatsoever, I have to believe the hoards of Remingtom/R51 haters would be blowing it up enormously. It's obviously no official pronouncement.

I, too, will be eagerly awaiting your range report, or heck, even a takedown report. I still haven't seen pictures of the frame or slide up close where the locking block sits; it'd be good to know just how it's cammed up during firing, and if it compresses the magazine when it drops down.

*Really puts things into perspective; when Kel Tec, Beretta, or half a dozen other makers announce a product, we hear about it being ready two years before it actually is(n't), and if/when it's finally dropped to sellers (in KT's case) it's in ones and twos for months while the final bugs are worked out, before rising to "tens" for the duration (~12 RFB's on GB, though they do seem to be pumping out KSG's in quantity). I saw 6-7 R51's on GB Monday, 50 today. And they're in stores, too. Very smooth rollout distribution

Does it have a barrel feed ramp and what kind of ignition system? Thanks

I like it but I have to admit I like your PPK and Mak better. Where did you get the Mak grips? I have a Mak at my FFL waiting for my NJ permits and I don't like the grips it came with. Your PPK is a beauty!
9 fingers

Definitely don't like that gap..

That gap is odd... and it looks like its not the grips?

Otherwise a full power 9mm the same size/thinner than a Mak? I am still wanting one.

Thanks for all the pics! It reminds me of my old Mak, but not in a bastard caliber!:D

As far as the gap, you got to have some room for the grip safety, but is it excessive?
