i have a blued police service six made in 1985, it has just very minor frecks of rust spots or some little specks of something in with the bluing on the cylinder only the frame is speck free. i've used oil 0000 wool, eraser and copper penny. i've got it to the point of it being smooth and i'm keeping it oiled. there is no pitting on the gun at all. the gun has at least 90% bluing left with just a little off at the barrel tip, and locks up solid tight when in firing position. i contacted the previous owner who admitted he kept it in a leather holster which caused the rust on the cylinder, he bought it new and said less than 2000 rds have been thru it. i can't afford a new reblue job as i'm on a fixed income and making ends meet is hard enough. my neighbor has offered me a trade, he has a taurus 65 stainless and a rossi stainless both with 4 inch barrel and he has offered me choice, he brags alot how stainless won't rust trying to get me to trade. they look good but don't lock up as tight as my service six. i love my ruger but it being blued bothers me as i got it to use in the outdoors. i keep it clean and oiled regular so no rust will appear. i've tried to take pics but the rust or whatever the frecks are is so small that it won't show them. everything on the gun is now smooth and running my fingers over the spots, nothing can be felt. i want to keep my service six but rust bothers me, if i knew it wouldn't come back i'd be ok with it, i keep it well oiled. so for those on here what would you do? if you couldn't get it reblued would you keep the ruger or trade? thanks for any help
 
Keep the ruger sell it if you don't like the blue it is worth more than either of those any day
 
Don't trade. That service six is a better gun than either of the ones he's offering. As long as you keep the Ruger oiled the rust will be kept at bay, so I wouldn't worry about it.
 
I'd keep the Ruger and not worry about having it reblued. It's a working gun and will eventually acquire even more character. And stainless isn't really and still requires some care to protect the gun.
 
Keep the Service-Six! If he offers both of his Taurus pistols, then think about it, but what harm will those flecks of rust cause you? (By the way, try a little toothpaste on a soft leather patch...or you can try a soft piece of cotton like from an undershirt; then use some BreakFree on another patch. Soft leather chamis is the best, though. It really works well when removing minor rust.)

You said you can't afford rebluing, but another option is hard chroming. This will make your gun look like stainless, but hard chrome, though very thin, is an incredibly hard coating that will virtually stop all wear in your gun, even the bore.

A few years ago I had a Beretta 70S .22lr. Great gun, but it developed a little rust on the side that kept reappearing no matter how many times I thought I had rid myself of it. I finally bit the proverbial bullet and sent it to Mahovsky's for a hard chrome job. I really liked that gun and I knew hard chroming it would not only rid me of the rust, it would make it the kind of gun I couldn't buy. So off the gun went.

Days later, the owner of the place called me. When I asked if there was a problem, he said, "No, I just wanted to tell you that you've got a very nice pistol and it's in exceptional condition." I thought he was going to offer to buy the gun, but he didn't. He promised to do a good job on the little .22 and I asked if he could polish it (normally an extra charge). He agreed and a couple of weeks later I got the gun back and he hadn't charged me for the polish. Here's a photo of the pistol when I got it back.

Hard chrome will last for the life of your gun. Some have tried to scratch it with nails, and it doesn't damage the finish. Anyway, it's something to think about. Some people even hard chrome their stainless guns.

Again, don't trade that gun. You will regret it if you do.

You would be getting the worst of that deal by far IMHO. There is NO way I'd trade a good Ruger for a Taurus or Rossi, ESPECIALLY not a sweet six series. That Ruger is a lifetime gun with minimal care.

I can understand concerns about rust and did some research to try and find the best treatment to combat rust as I've got some guns I'd like to treat myself. What seems to be a good treatment to try is Corrosion-X CLP. It's got a great reputation as a rust preventative and has consistantly glowing reviews. I've not yet tried it myself but I'll be including a bottle on my next Amazon order.

FYI: I can attest to the fact that stainless steel is NOT rust proof as I had a Kimber 1911 in stainless that got some rust on the slide. Really opened my eyes for sure.
 
Bad trade for you. If you take care of it, it will not get any worse. If you are on a fixed budget looks should not be that big of a concern. Lock up and having a superior gun should
 
Like the others have said: Do Not Trade The Ruger! You have a wonderful gun that is virtually bullet proof. Both of the others are no where near the quality and durability of your gun. I don't mind some wear, it adds character.

If you do the cerakote you have to first take the pistol apart and sand blast the original finish of first if you want the cerakote to last. If you just apply it to the finished pistol it will just come off rather easily. I like the heat cured cerakote, have it on a few guns and its held up so far.

Edit: Oh yeah don't make that trade. Nothing against Taurus or Rossi, just your Ruger is worth more. Also stainless will rust. It is not rust proof.
 
DO NOT TRADE! EVEN FOR BOTH!

The trade he is offering you is the equivelent of this:
You have a good Solid 10 year old Honda Civic, that needs paint.

He is offering you your choice of an '85 Yugo or an '85 Le Car, both of which have good paint.

Yes, that is the reality of things.
 
Keep the Service Six. It's a beter gun overall than either the Taurus or the Rossi. If the rust becomes more of a problem get it hard chrome plated, like that offered by Ron Mahovsky at Metalife.
 
he's said he is gonna take them to a local shop and trade to a ruger there if i don't trade. thanks again for the advice, i will keep the ruger. since the cylinder is the only thing that has specks, i will just keep it oiled. it's not bad just a speck here and there, with the rest of the gun without any i guess it'll be ok. i know it's the most accurate revolver i have ever owned. thanks again
