Wha... what?

I don't see any gun related myths...

The poll isn't supposed to contain any specific myths. Read the title. Which of those topics is surrounded by the most gun related myths.

For example, I voted for the home defense handgun/shotgun/rifle choice. There are multiple myths surrounding that, such as:

Some people say a rifle...any rifle even 5.56/.223...is a poor choice because of "overpenetration" so you should use a shotgun with buckshot or a handgun. That's a myth.

People also say that a pump shotgun is best for a novice or inexperienced shooter because it is more reliable. That is a myth (short stroking among other things)

People say a carbine is a poor choice because it is too long, meanwhile the people they are often asking about have little to no training or experience with handguns and aren't going to be shooting and hitting reliably from a position of retention, making the 'carbine is too long' thing a myth (shooting position with handgun out sticks out just as far in front of you)

People say it is a bad idea to have a sling on an HD long gun because "you'll get hung up/snag". But if you ask them what they got snagged on doing dry runs in their house you get *crickets*, and if you look at military who clear rooms/buildings or you look at SWAT teams what do you almost always see? Slings. If you go to a 'tactical' class, what do you see used and recommended and taught? Slings.

And I could go on.

There are so many myths covered in this poll I don't see how it can be of any real use. Nearly all of the choices have myths surrounding them. This is like the nuclear bomb of flame threads potentially. :) We could see every argument in the whole gun culture come up here.

Which ones have the most myths surrounding them?

Of course the government/police cannot be wrong, especially when it comes to guns.

We did add the smiley, Warp. :D And I forgot to add, 00 Buck is my choice at close quarters.

Relax! ;) We are on the same side.

I should have added one more:

"The myths employed by some on gun forums to attack/denigrate ANY poll on ANY subject." That would have been a strong contender for #1.

I chose "Which is the best handgun defense round?" followed closely by "What's the overall best: 1911 or Polymer?".

Who cares?

Waste of bandwdith.

In all sincerity why did you take the time to post that? Was it simply to bring attention to yourself? Or a desire to control? I really do wonder when I surf gun threads (particularly polls) and see postings like yours.

Your "bandwidth" comment is bull manure, by the way.

I recently started shooting muzzleloaders and I was astounded by three things:

* The number of different patch lubes out there (from one's own saliva to olive oil to high-tech $9.00/tube goop and everything in between) and how vehement people are about the different lubes.

* The fights over how to clean a muzzleloader -- usually water vs. non-water.

* What sort of cleaning/ramming rod to use. Whether or not to use bore bushes is also huge.

So much myth surrounded each one of these three -- it was difficult to know fact from lore.

Seems like many of the things referred to as myths in this thread would be more accurately described as differences of opinion. A myth occurs when a factual answer clashes with an incorrect answer.

No amount of discussion on "What's the best anything?" could ever result in a myth, not only because the answers are opinions, but because best is both subjective and subject to various conditions.

I think what you were looking for is, which of these topics have such widely varied answers due to widespread myth OR outright lack of knowledge.

I.guess it's an interesting social experiment to see what topics are most often associated with misunderstandings or misinformation, but really, that's all you'll get out of this:

How much do we think we know about what people don't know?

Well... this poll will give us an idea about the answer to that question, but it definitely doesn't answer it. Polls in general are plagued with bias and misrepresentation anyway.

I think that's what orionengnr was getting at.

I was too lazy to push all the buttons listed but IMHO you should have had a "all the above" choice as well. Most of those tend to be hot topics every time somebody asks about them.:scrutiny:

No.

The point of the poll what was to see what you and others found most pumped full of myth.

As people voted we would then get a distribution -- in other words, poll results, which are now visible. Adding an "all of the above" button would have defeated the poll and if you really do feel all are actually the same (highly unlikely) then you could punch all the buttons.

The one that comes to mind the most to me is "What's the best handgun defense round", usually followed by the ubiquitous "9mm. versus .45 ACP "debate.
