I voted 1911 vs polymer, only because tastes great or less filling isnt gun relate.;)
sure it is.
drink a beer and admire your guns, seems funny that someone would waste
part of their life to say it was a waste of bandwidth.
I voted bbl break in.

Seems like many of the things referred to as myths in this thread would be more accurately described as differences of opinion. A myth occurs when a factual answer clashes with an incorrect answer.

No amount of discussion on "What's the best anything?" could ever result in a myth, not only because the answers are opinions, but because best is both subjective and subject to various conditions.

They absolutely can result in myth.

For example, saying that a round of 5.56 is an "over-penetration" risk but a 9mm round is not...that is a myth, and it results from the "what is the best home defense firearm" question

I voted for a few of them but I think the most myths these days come from the caliber wars, whether they be in SD handguns or hunting applications.

With SD handguns there's the myths that there actually is a real world difference in the 3 popular choices. You also have SOME .45 fans that think their pet round is far superior to a 9mm or .40 when in fact the difference with modern, expanding hollow point ammo is nearly nil.

Same with hunting rounds. If you're hunting whitetails or mule deer it really doesn't matter if you use a 7mm-08, .270 or a .30-06 folks. If you think it does then you believe everything you read in the gun rags.

I suspect there was a considerable difference between the 9mm and the .45ACP back when they did not have benefit of the last 20 or so years of hyper-competitive ammunition development that we enjoy today. The myths surrounding the 9mm (ex. someone took a full 17 round mag of 9mm in the back of the head and neck and was simply able to hack and spit the bullets out and walk away) were largely bull manure. The fact that there is no killing distinction between the two today has really quieted a lot of that claptrap.

Hunting is a different story. A couple of my uncles are serious deer hunters and they always argued about the .308 vs. the .270. One uncle who hunts about once every 10 years (maybe) defends the .300 Wby. Mag. (probably because he has a rifle in that caliber.) My Dad who does not hunt or really shoot is a staunch .30-06 man -- likely deriving from his service days.

Oh, I 100% agree.
No doubt modern technology and premium bullets have closed the gap between rounds, both in SD handguns and hunting applications.

The modern expanding hollow points have made the choice of handguns strictly a personal preference.
The same goes for hunting rifles. Used to you had to use the heaviest bullet you could find for moose and big bears. Now a 150 grain Barnes or Nosler Partition will do a better job than the 200 and 220 grain bullets of 40-50 years ago in a .30 caliber rifle.

No doubt, technology is a wonderful thing.

OP my thought was virtually all of the topics you listed usually result in 2-4 pages of "opinions" whether truth or not that then degrade that thread to the point of being locked. Hence my comment.;) We do tend to have many strong opinions on this board whether truth or myth it seems. I try to give factual advice but sometimes we all go off into the ditch..................:uhoh: Might even happen with this one.

Which ones have the most myths surrounding them?

Yeah I read the question. I'm just scared to answer it. I don't want to start a flame war here. :) If pushed on this I'd have to go with something about whether barrels need a break in procedure. We see posts all over the map on that issue when it gets rolling. Just don't ask me where I stand. :)

That was my thinking too. That's why I said this could be the flame thread to end all flame threads. We could see 40 different arguments going at once in this one. So I'm trying to stay as neutral as possible while still answering the question. After seeing hundreds of posts just on the .25 auto (with no real POV being pitted against another POV) I figure it's easy to set off a flame fest without even trying.

This poll is about opinions regarding myths -- and not facts. It's interesting to see some people try to derail threads -- and certainly not only this thread or only those that I create. Very intriguing.

Why did you even comment to begin with?

See above?

Gee, let me think. Maybe it was because I wanted to. Yeah that's it. I wanted to. Satisfied? Maybe you missed the smiley face in my post. It was meant to be humorous. That's why they have smiley faces. Why do you care what I posted anyway? I didn't do it to insult anyone or hijack the thread. I did see the potential for a flame fest but I didn't really expect it. I was making a joke. Sorry if I offended you. That wasn't my intention. But you have to admit there is potential here for starting up every "9mm vs. .45ACP" type thread there is. All it would take would be for someone to say, "the most myths surround the caliber needed for SD because everyone knows the .45 is superior but people still argue the 9mm is equal" and you have a potential flame. I didn't try to start one of those flames. I made a joke about the possibility. I shouldn't have to explain this to you. I didn't stop anyone from posting anything. Please lighten up. I never meant any harm to you or your thread. I'm not the only one who saw that potential either. But apparently "that" is what might start something. No offense intended sir. Again, please pay attention to the smileys. They tell you when someone is joking.

You missed the #1 biggest: "My daddy told me...." Or drill sergeant, or uncle, or hunting buddy.

"My daddy told me the rifles they were issued back in the war were slow and jammed and his drill sergeant told him those m1 enblocks pinging made them suicide machines in real combat and they never should have let their Springfields get taken away." "My daddy told me when the army switched to .38 the philippino insurgents would just ignore being shot and hack you to death with machetes." "My daddy told me that his 6.5x55 could take any game in north america or Europe and was accurate over long distances without being a shoulder killer." "My daddy told me the army never shoulda switched to the m9 because...."

Another vote for #1 "The best SD handgun round". There are several good ones, but this debate will probably never end, everyone likes their choice the best. :) (Including me)

In spite of some heated and emotional responses here I commend you for keeping it the high road. A little sarcasm and corresponding hurt feelings happen but you all (or y'all) kept it under control. Insert happy :) here. Personally I voted for which weapon/HD because I visited another forum that burned my buns for commenting. Some of those members were very unkind altho some were helpful and positive. The forum is mainly for one type of long gun but the subforum topic didn't deal with that weapon. There were a lot of myths being stated there due to the bias built into the forum, granted. I just wanted to thank you for keeping it high road.

Amen! These should be on the list!

I'm not sure if the Internet has reduced or increased the "XYZ told me..." syndrome? At least with the Internet someone can do a lot of sifting to zero-in on the truth. Back in the day, "experts" were often not questioned.

Poor methodology in the poll. Either the #1 and #2 responses were influenced by being #1 and #2, or you placed what you thought would be the top choices that way. They should have been randomized. I chose #1.

Questioning an "expert" in the old days meant going to the library in many cases and it meant knowing how to use a library when you got there. Now libraries are a joke compared to what they were back then because of the internet. People can do their own research sitting in their underwear at 2 in the morning. It makes questioning those "expert" much easier now. Of course we still see lots and lots of people who are willing to buy into anything the crowd wants to go along with. "Group think" is probably at an all time high too but I think overall we see more people who can question the experts so they do it more now IMO. It might be the same percentage of people that are willing to question what their Uncle Bob told them and we still have the same percentage willing to go along with group think. But the people willing to question things can do it far more often than in the past so overall we see a higher rate of people asking questions. For example how many of us here mistakenly call a magazine a "clip" now? Even that was far more common before the net age. Now more people know better. TV was the source of information for a couple of generations and we all know how well that worked. The net has made it very possible to find good info about almost everythnig.

Naw.

They were typed in at random, from the top of my head. The fact that you cannot ascertain that from the distribution tells me you don't know what you're talking about.

Nice attempt at an attack though...

Gee, a thread collecting all the things we argue about, and giving us another chance to argue them all -- on the pretext of discussing which ones folks are MOST wrong about?

The best answer is, "I'm not going to answer."

Too close to trolling. And we've already wasted too much brainwidth on arguing over the poll itself!

If you're stuck in a car with buddies on an 8-hour car trip and REALLY need to kill the time, this is a useful sort of diversionary mental folly.

For THR? Not worthy.
