What's in Your Murse?

Murse? Good grief I feel embarrassed for even knowing the definition of murse let alone carry one. Around here (middle of Wyoming) stuff goes on the belt or in a pocket. On the belt goes an emergency pager on the left side and my carry gun on the right side. In the pockets are keys, small cell phone, wallet, Benchmade auto knife, and a handkerchief for wiping the tears from my eyes when my feelings get hurt.

Man pURSE.

Oh. I never heard of one before now.

EDIT:

I don't have anything like a murse, unless you might consider a laptop bag a murse. For workdays, I'm pulling my tool cart and laptop bag from my car to buildings.

My laptop bag has:
Laptop, mouse, and other computer stuff.
Service records, packing lists, Altoids, maybe some small parts.

My pockets have the usual pocket gun (when legal), small cheap knife, keys, wallet, etc.

My car on the other hand has all the other stuff. More tools, parts, first aid kit, water, beach towel, hatchet, gloves, cap, pistol (when legal), ammo (when legal), paper maps, and roadside car stuff.

I don’t carry a murse, I need to be in control of my personal property at all times. I can’t carry a bag while work, and I would not leave a murse unattended for a minute.
In my pocket is:
*Wallet
*Benchmade
*NAA 22 mag.
*Zippo
*Truck Key

I only carry things I routinely use: keys, wallet, phone, small pocket knife, change. Things that I might occasionally need stay in the car.

Amen brother! My wife has been looking at carry purses and the first question I asked her was when was the last time you walked off and left it. She thought for a moment then went online to look at true holsters.

My wife used to call then "Man Bag". I felt obliged to correct her on that.

Alexander A rearked,

The test should be not whether something could potentially be useful, but whether it's reasonably certain to be useful. It's liberating to travel as lightly as possible.

Respectfully disagree.

The test is what in past years I have needed (not merely wanted) and sorely missed. These are things which are "certain to be useful." And once again we are hung up on the term "reasonable."

I'm thinking of the term "possibles bag" of black powder days. That's a little less feminized than "murse." I'm not sure how the term "purse" got to be semantically linked to women exclusively anyhow. Think of how the term "pursestrings" is used.

"Murse" (= "man purse") is an apt expression, since it implies the feminization of the male gender. Usually, it's women who are known for carrying all their household clutter with them. Now, we have men weighing themselves down with useless clutter on a daily basis. The test should be not whether something could potentially be useful, but whether it's reasonably certain to be useful. It's liberating to travel as lightly as possible...

Actually it does not. Nice try though. Your comments do say something about yourself though. They have to do with insecurity...

The use of a murse does not preclude such "control."

One thing I'm pleased to see is that no one made the mistake of suggesting that carrying one's firearm in a murse renders it any less effective. Measured using a shot timer, I can draw and put a round on target in just over 2 seconds. I suspect that's faster than many who would be struggling to clear their underwear...

Insulin, Needle, container with morning pills, container with evening pills, aspirin, Heavy Duty pain killers AKA Oxycodone, candy & crakers "in case of sugar crash", test strips & meter, Camera & batteries.

Non of the above is useless clutter other than maybe the camera & batteries, but they do come in handy and are much better than those so called cameras in a phone.

A VERY strong analogy! Go to a black powder rendezvous and just about everyone will be toting a possibles bag, and it won't be simply for reloading supplies. I'm not sure where stuffing one's pockets became a test of manhood, but it's amusing to see that it has for some.

I use "murse" because I'm comfortable with it. When I first started carrying a murse I referred to it as a "burse." While historically correct, no one knows what a burse is today and most would say "what, your purse?" Someone said "oh, your MURSE" and I thought that was sorta cool.

One thing I am certain of. The severity of one's reaction to carrying a murse it inversely proportional to their confidence in their own manhood.

You point out something important. Some have special needs that are facilitated by carrying a murse.

I just carry a few items on my person including a gun and iphone of course. Most of that other stuff it seems a lot of guys carry I put in a briefcase or backpack when traveling. If I'm not at home I can access anything else I need via my car or cell phone. Flashlight and a lot of other stuff lives in the car consoles.

I was thinking about WHY I carry a murse and there really are several reasons.

Even though I'm fairly well organized, it seemed as though I was always searching for my keys, wallet, parking meter change, pen or whatever, just as I was leaving the house. I haven't spent a second searching for any of that stuff over the past 15 years. That's a big deal to me.

I would also leave stuff behind because I didn't want to jam it all into my pockets and then I would regret it. Now that I have a CCL (I did not when I first got a murse), I suspect I would also have settled for an inferior carry gun if I did not already have an excellent way to carry it.

Work ID and pager (workdays only) cell phone, keys, small pocket knife, wallet, comb, a minor amount of cash, and sometimes a pistol.

My sex is male, my gender is masculine.

Even if you are "wedded" to your handbag it is a pretty sub-optimal place to carry a firearm. Even if you can draw from it quickly -- and the test runs of that claim would have to be pretty realistic for me to accept as a general truth -- it is still quite susceptible to the sorts of loss, theft, and misplacement that befall everyone's hand-carried gear from time to time. A good concealment holster is almost impossible to set down, forget, walk away from, or have snatched or pilfered when you're out in public.

The differences in what might be thought of as capabilities between the guns folks choose to carry holstered and those they choose to carry in bags aren't so extreme as to necessitate the choice, either.

I carry a "to-die-for" little manly handbag every day, but don't carry my gun in it. While I can do so, and would do so under some specific circumstance, I'm sure, "off-body" carry tends to hover somewhere between a best-of-a-bad-lot compromise option if your situation completely precludes holster wear, and a too-easy excuse not to exert the effort to use a more secure, defensible, and rapid-deploying belt carry option.

As usual count me in with Sam. On occasion I carry a bag, but never with a firearm in it, and I intend to keep it that way. An on-body holster is just too good at everything to consider different.

It seems that the original question about what others might carry in a bag or elsewhere has become a search for justification for carrying the object in the first place.

Not especially gun related.

You're probably right. This is only a THR subject in relation to weapons carry -- we aren't a personal accouterments and men's accessories forum -- so perhaps this should just be closed.

Anyone want to talk about the whys and wherefores of carrying weapons in a shoulder bag then? Or is this done?

I'd be happy to discuss the why-nots of off body carry.
