Why so ridiculous on EDC?

Wow, I just learned from this thread that there is a freaking forum for EDC!!!!!

More the minimalist approach here. Wallet, knife, phone, keys. Gun sometimes if I feel like it, although a defibrillator would statistically be much more useful.

She kept her wallet in her bra as she got older. In the wallet was a check book. Also about 30 wadded up kleenixs. A small Beretta, either 25 or 32 I don't recall. A rosary, a pen, a longish stainless nail file. "What else is in there?" I asked her some decades ago. "A tit", she told me.

That's what she told you, anyway...with all that other stuff in there, I wouldn't be so sure!

;)

There's a forum for everything. I was looking for a better bulb for one of my maglites... That's when I found several forums dedicated to nothing but hacking flashlights. :scrutiny:

Was it the movie "Police Academy" where the 2 main characters were about to get busy and they were carrying arsenals?

My EDC is actually keys, wallet, phone. That is what I need to get around and deal with people.

If I were less restricted in attire and weapons I would carry firearm, knife, flashlight, pens (I always lose it if I have only 1) and a reload as well. Lighter is not a bad idea.

I do have some nice nunchuka nearby at one job. I'm not an expert in them but I am proficient.

I love how people get wrapped around the axle over what other people choose to, or not to, do. Carry what works for you and don't worry about what YouTube does.

Yeap! My EDC bag is WELL thought out and its contents regularly reviewed. Why someone else would give a rip about what someone else carries suggests pathology...

I should've been clear that I don't physically carry my pack all day long. It hangs up in the shop at work. When I go to the store or mall I toss it in the trunk when I park.

And no sir. No rambo complex or ocd paranoia. I've been in several car wrecks in my life, none of which were my fault but all of them I wished I had some of the gear I EDC now.
I've seen guys do the stoopidist crap with tools or sharp objects only to regret it. Wished I had a decent FAK & steri strips a few times.
Been stuck on the side of a highway at night waiting for AAA & wished I had a bottle of water & a few flares.

Being inconvenienced is a daily part of life...being uncomfortable is a choice

Okay, I'll post a real response.

I don't know why people carry so much stuff, but to each their own.

I carry a pistol (sometimes P238, sometimes XDs), a Victorinox Spartan swiss army knife, and my wallet and phone. Also a set of keys.

If I'm in a situation where I have to draw, then I'm in a life threatening situation. I don't want to think about what to use.

About all I'd add, if I feel I need it, is a pepper spray for a non-lethal option.

I keep as little as possible on me, to avoid being flustered if I do have to draw. Do I really want 6 options of things when I find myself in a situation? He's threatening me, should I pull my tanto, my baton, my pepper spray, does this threat warrant drawing my pistol, etc. No time for all of that processing mid-crisis. Draw or don't, is all I want to think about.

I should have added I have the pepper spray mostly for jogging, in case I encounter some rabid/sick critter or an unfriendly dog on the loose.

I always enjoy looking through big EDC lists, or photos or videos of same. Its fun to see what people think is indespensible. On the other hand, I tend to try and pare my own EDC down as much as possible. I just don't care for pockets full of "stuff".

  1. Keyring with 4 keys on it (home, car, mailbox, gunlocker) plus AAA/LED flashlight
  2. Pocket knife - I've got a whole drawer full of slipjoints, lockbacks, autos and even a few pocket-sized fixed blades. My most common carry is probably my old, beat up Spyderco Delica, though.
  3. Wallet with one debit card, one credit card, DL, CCW a bit of cash. No stack of photos, no wad of old reciepts, no dozens of cards. Slim and minimal.
  4. Pen - Fisher "Bullet" Space Pen
  5. Phone - Currently its a Samsung Galaxy S4
  6. Handgun - Right now its either a Glock 36 or S&W386 with one spare mag/speedloader.
Even this seems like an awful lot at times.

I kinda figure I carry too much stuff. I carry 2 key rings (one for work keys-one for personal keys), a clip knife (I like being able to use it one handed), my wallet, Pocket change, screwtips for work (1/4", 5/16", 3/8". adapter for 3/8" drive sockets & phillips - If I leave them in my apron or bag someone will "borrow" them when I'm not around), lighter & cigs. If at work I have markers with me. If off work & out of the house I usually have a pistol & spare magazine.

I don't carry a flashlight on my person but I do keep one in the truck, several around the house & a headlamp on my hardhat at work.

I consider what I carry a bit much.

So don't do it yourself.

I consider what I carry a bit much.

My personal carry gear is XD9sc, holster, wallet, keys, pen, pocket knife, Streamlight and phone. The end. Occasionally chapstick..

Some people consider that to be ridiculous. Many think it is paranoid and/or excessive and unnecessary to carry a gun.

They likely consider what you carry to be a bit much.

I don't carry a spare mag (never needed to pull my gun, let alone reload it)

By that logic why even bother to carry the gun.

Also why on earth do people carry "combat" knives? If you have reason to stab them you have reason to shoot them.

This statement shows extreme ignorance of knives. It betrays a dangerous and extremely incorrect belief that a knife is per se an inferior weapon to a gun. In reality the knife is probably a superior weapon in extremely close quarters. There are lots of situations in which going for a blade might be a better option. Knives also make for useful tools in a number of other situations.

In short it is a different tool for a different task. Its like asking why anyone with hammer would carry a screwdriver.

I understand if that is all you have to defend yourself then fine go ahead but there is no need for carrying more than 2 knives on your person.

I wouldn't paint with such a broad brush. Particularly when it appears you know very little about knives. Many people may not have need, and many people may have no desire to.

(never needed to pull my gun, let alone reload it)

Invoking that logic the question "Then why do you need to carry the gun if you never need it?" comes to mind.

Current EDC: Wallet, car/house keys on separate chains, folding knife, headache medication, wallet, phone, flashlight, firearm, spare magazine, pepper spray. My former EDC list made me consider adding suspenders to carry the weight.

Personally, I don't think "EDC", in the context used in forums like this one, was really meant to include everything from socks to neckties.

I would think that most common articles, such as wallet, purse, keys, combs, and so forth aren't really germane to the discussion. Knives, guns, kubotans, extra magazine, etc...sure.

But hey...that's me!

But, if people really care to know how I dress every day, I carry comb, handkerchief, knurled lamp extractor, CPO coin, nail clippers, three-bladed pocket knife, one or two sets of keys, cell phone, socks, steel toed shoes, jeans, appropriate shirt, ball cap, and a wallet that carries a variety of IDs, credit/debit cards, library cards, CWP, an emergency stash of $100, and various business cards. And let's not forget my Galco CB2-38B Firm Contour Belt.

Top it off with a wedding band and pair of glasses and that about sums it up.

You'll note a conspicuous lack of a firearm in all that mess. This is because I cannot carry a firearm either on my person or in my vehicle at the shipyard where I work. And, since I've been working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week for some time now, that means most days for a while, now, I haven't carried my firearm at all. I get up, get ready for work, spend 12 to 16 hours at work, then get some sleep so I can repeat the process all over again.

So technically, my actual, "in context", Every Day Carry with respect to self-defense is limited to my knife and whatever weapon of opportunity I can utilize from what I carry or can pick up around me.

Gun, Phone, Keys, wallet. Thats all.

But I will say. To the guy who keeps six knives on his person. When a jury sees that it wont look good for you.

I think they're going to need a little more evidence to convict a lawful citizen of a crime other than the fact that they had more than one or two knives on their person, but I guess that's dependent on where you live. If you live in MA, NJ, DC, or NY, you might just suffer the same fate for just carrying a gun. Here in VA, I don't really worry too much about that.

Oops, I just went though my backpack (really a computer case that I carry the POS Surface Pro in) and found more stuff. Yes there is even a stapler in there.

I tend to carry ten tons of junk around on and in my pants, a Leatherman wingman, a victorinox sak, a specialized emt multitool, a Fenix ld22 fkashlight, two sets of keys one for my car goes on belt loop, the other for every thing els goes in pocket, a pen or two, a galaxy s5 in my shirt pocket, my wallet, a nintendo 3ds xl with nerf case and a soft case with games eyeglass cleaning cloth and spare stylis. My 1911 cocked and locked with two spare mags, And a eyeglass case.

I fixed it for ya ;)

I carry a backpack daily with crap I pray I never need to use...ie Israeli bandage & tourniquet in my FAK.
I also carry things I use daily like bandanas & shemagh's for working in the sun (lawn care industry in FL) as well as my lunch & snacks. Good flashlight for those 6am mornings, leatherman bit cards, spare cash, meds, emergency cold packs that you break & get cold for heat related issues or sprains....etc etc.
I've even got one of those gaterade premade go juices that could even be used by someone that's diabetic like my coworker should his sugar become low (made w/sugar not saccharin)

I also keep silly things in my trunk like jumper cables, spare tire, lug wrench, jack, a few road flares, a few bottles of water, flashlight..etc etc.

So when someone asks me why I carry so much crap I smile & just say better to have it & not need it.

EDC, BABY!!!

Dude is that a sausage stuffed in the webbing of your pack?

Without saying what we do, my wife works in the medical field, and I'm involved with midstream hydrocarbon measurement.. Our combined "EDC" means we can poke holes in someone, measure the blood temp/pressure & flow leaving the body with a coriolis tube, patch it up and do it again....

Lol! JK!
We don't pack that much crap. Mostly energy bars and.... Come to think of it, we carry to much crap, but it's mostly in the truck.

My non gun stuff is wallet, cell phone, the bigger size Swiss Army knife they now issue to troops, bic lighter, flashlight, and a emergency whistle on my key chain. When i go to father in laws cabin, I have enough stuff on me should I get stuck on one of the logging roads overnight.

People actually carry challenge coins? I rarely put one in my wallet, usually when going to a bar if someone wants to pull that game. Depending on the bar, I'll either bring my JCOS or Rak 6 coin. But never everyday, at least not anymore.

Knowing where to put non tactical/gun related items can be helpful. Another EDC I read said he carries his cell phone and spare magazine in his support side front pocket. I thought this was a good idea for simplicity and more streamlined. Turns out his spare magazine was for a 1911 and not a double stack like I carry, so it didn't look as smooth as the author's setup. Still gave me a few ideas to improve my pocket setup.

I feel somewhat the poorer for having read this.

Until I looked it up moments ago, I was blissfully unaware of the term EDC and incredibly pleased with myself on those days I left the house with both phone AND wallet.
