Current prices $600-750. But folks are asking new gun prices for older smith .22lr k22 revolvers. A few years ago 350-450 with box and papers.

If you can get a nice one for under $600 you are doing good. I paid $700 for my P&R 17-3.

If in truly excellent condition, not a bad deal. I have bought 2 pre-model 17s and a 17-2 in the past year, and paid $400 for one in great mechanical condition, but LOTS of blue wear. I paid $500 for one that was 98%+, but consider I stole that one. Then the most recent one $550 for one that was far from perfect. I think you are in the range. The area of the country seems to affect the selling price as well. I'd offer him $600 for it and see what happens/ Good luck! Let us know.

The 17 alone is 335.00 more than I paid 4 years ago.

Grab it! Nice ones in excellent condition are not falling out of trees.

In my area $650 would be a good price for excellent condition.

I paid $200 and $265 for my two but that was 17yrs ago.

I paid $125 for my 17-3, but that was 40 years ago.

What everyone is trying to tell you is this:

Older (especially blued) S&W revolvers have been appreciating at a fairly steady rate over the last ten years, and will probably continue to do so in the foreseeable future.

I sold a 17-3 about five years ago for $400, and probably gave it away at that price.

I bought an 18-3 about the same time for the same price (that was the reason for selling the 17).

I am sure I cannot replace the 17 for that price, but on the other hand, if I were to sell the 18, I would get a bit more than I paid. Wish I could have kept both, but that's the way it is. I really prefer the 4" barrel, as it matches the remainder of my revolvers.

I paid $475 for a 17, 6" about 6 months ago, made in '51, no box. It was on consignment, along with a 14, 6" in 38 Spl., which I got for $350, also made in '51.

Come on guys , you are killing me . I still haven't bought it yet .

Let me try to help you.

If you want it, you should have already bought it before someone else does.
(They don't come along as often as they used too anymore.)

I have paid too much for a gun like that, with food & rent money I didn't have at the time either.

But I still have the guns, and I didn't starve to death.

And some of the S&W's I paid $79.00 for back then are pretty much the same ones you are looking to buy now for 10X that.

If you want it, buy it.
If you don't, don't.

Either way, you won't lose any money in the long run if you shoot it, and take care of it.

And you will Bee Happy in the meantime, as soon as the credit card bill is paid!

(Unlike lots of things you buy, you will still have a fine Model 17 after you eat Ramon Noodles for a month.)

The price is fair and it sounds like a very nice specimen. Traditionally I never see the kinds of prices some people here see on guns. I suspect "it's their life" and it is something they focus on all the time.

As you said below, I think you know the answer on this M-17.

I know $650 is a lot , but I would rather have a nice used one than one with that ugly lock hole . I don't know that I will ever make any money on it at that price if I was too sell it though .

People make a big deal about the lock. I have never seen one malfunction. But this one doesn't have the lock. Go for it. Offer them $600 and paying the extra $50 isn't worth all the aggrevation unless you intend to sell it soon. Then I would not buy it.

Only you know the answer to this question. Do you routinely sell guns you just purchased? Years ago I did, but I knew going into a deal that I was likely to sell it within months not years of buying it. Value is different with that kind of approach.

You aren't overpaying if you like what something is and agree to the asking price. Just because someone else in another part of the country might have paid a little more or less, that has little to no bearing on what it sells for where you are.

If you like it, then buy it. I found my 17-3 at a flea market where a girl was selling her dad's stuff after he died. What I paid in that scenario is different than yours.

I bought this one a year or so ago for $425. Sold it at a gun show last month for $625.

Won't tell you what I paid for it a long time ago. Just go get yours, you'll enjoy it.
