Hello the highroad each and every day for the past couple days I've been coming to you for some advice posting some questions and getting some awesome feedback for that I thank you and raise another question.

I'm gearing up for hunting season this August which is coming up rather quicker than I have anticipated and I'm wondering and thinking about getting a new Knife. Very recently a friend and myself killed and slaughtered a cow in which they had on their property and I tried to use Gerber got hook knife that we picked up from Walmart and I was rather disappointed in the functionality how it fit my hand as well as the performance in which the knife displayed. In all honesty the knife was given to me so I really can't complain to top it off I believe the knife is only a $20 knife or.

So I'm wondering what kind of knives you guys are running for hunting primarily dear pig or even Alcar big game I asked as you know I primary night so an all-purpose night that would you be used only for hunting one that would keep a good edge fit getting a hand and not break the bank.

My budget for the new knife will be around $100 I will post a link to an knife which I kind of want to get but you guys are professionals so please chime in and what are using me what's working and what is awesome . Thanks

Spend as much as you want, but you won't find a better knife for skinning and gutting game.

I have 3-4 of these and keep one in the pack, truck, and around the house. They just work.

If you want something a little nicer then it really comes down to personal preference. There are tons of good knives including the Buck you're looking at. I usually end up with a decent quality folder with a 3-3.75" blade for most of my work, but I have nicer knives. Some of my favorites, but they are no better of worse than dozens of other options. These are just some in your price range that I like.

Some good knives at good prices. For under $25 this is a good one

A 4" Kabar that was found at a dump. Apparently thrown out because the pommel fell off. I epoxied an antler base in place and it works great. I'd also like to replace my Big Swede folder, but they are hard to find (at a price I'm willing to pay...)

Thanks you guys and I really appreciate it links to the various knives. Interestingly for some reason I've been putting a lot of material thought into what kind of gear I would. I think I'm forgetting to have fun. Maybe a old timer folder will work? Worked well when I was younger.

Have a Buck Special and one similar to what you are looking at as a backup (it was a gift). We use the Special most of the time on elk primarily.Skinning and working up an elk is much faster with the 6 inch blade. A nice sharp hatchet is indispensable. We use a Buck General for more serious butchering work. Need a diamond hone for them though (The "fine" diamond hone is really all you need).

Think you will find prices on "new" Buck knives to be much better if you look on ebay. OYE

When i was on holiday in the US in 1978 i bought a Imperial Double Eagle # 415. I think i paid less than 10 dollars for it. That has been my hunting knife till two years ago. That knife has dressed hundred and hundreds of deer. When i lived in England i was shooting on average about 60 deer a year. That knife is still good for another life time of hunting. I carry it now when I'm pheasant hunting .
I treated my self to a Stuart Mitchell Knife for my 65th birthday and thats now my hunting knife of choice as i shoot less deer and more boar these days.
Mora kinives are good. As they are made in Sweden I would say that:)

4" drop point I made from an older stainless 6" Japanese blade (was up swept in factory version). Proly done 6 or 7 dozen deer, hundreds of rabbits and geese and doves. And a few turkeys.

Did do one deer with a Benchmade 530 (because it was sharp and my reg knife had done a couple and I forgot to touch it up).

I still run the old beater knife for most, but also have a CRKT M11 for backup.
Decent cheap knife IMHO.

My next knife will be a Behring drop point old school hunter. $385

+100 to the above. I went with the Mora Bushcraft Black as it has a thicker blade, 90 degree spine, and made of 1095 Cabon Steel. IMHO Carbon steel is easier to sharpen and holds a edge better than stainless. To keep the steel from corroding I just use vegetable oil or olive oil on the blade after cleaning it. It is amazingly comfortable in the hand and scary sharp. I think you would be very hard pressed to find a better knife for the same price point. Heck I bet it is better than some of the more expensive brands out there too.

I purchased mine here, they are very good to do business with.

Big fan of the S.O.G. Seal Pup for a do all knife. I also like the Mora Kniv 711 for a general usage blade. I prefer around a 9" overall knife with a decent choil and a solid backbone.

My favorite all around knife is the Buck 110 . I also like the Buck 105 Pathfinder .

Those Mora knives come very sharp , but don't hold a edge very long at all . I can't finish even one deer before it is dull . They are easy to sharpen though .

Buck Vanguard or a 110 folder most often on my hunting belts. Use aWoodsman, a Personal, a Skinner,a Special and a Buck hand axe for processing meat. Often pocket carry a largeTrapper as a general utility working blade.

I've cleaned all sorts of fish and game (including helping butcher a deer ) with this inexpensive and USA made Becker BK11. Even with the add on micarta handles, its well under your budget.

I mostly use my 40 year old Buck 110 or my 35 year Schrade fixed blade drop point. Whatever you get, don't forget to pack a good stone and a little oil in your field pack.

I have a browning folder 3 in one. Its not pretty but it has a gut hook, saw and knife. I love it in the field as it is all I need for a knife.

A knife is a very personal choice. What fits in my hand comfortably might not fit your hand at all.
Buck makes great knives at multiple price points. If you think you like the vangaurd you first posted and there is room in your budget I would try to find one of the upgraded versions with better steel. There is absolutely nothing wrong with 420HC, (its a big step up from 440A and random no name stainless steels used in cheaper knives) but I have found that it will stain/discolor more easily and doesn't hold an edge as long as steels like ATS34/ 154CM, S30V etc. I know that buck at least makes the vangaurd with S30V for cabelas, and may have other models available too.

I like carbon steel blades for my camping/hunting knives. You might also check out ESEE knives, particularly the ESEE 3 or 4, or the becker BK16 for a nice carbon steel fixed blade knife .

Mora's all the way.

I have been using Mora's since before I graduated from high school in 1961. I actually have quite a collection of them. I have never had a problem with them going dull that fast. I have gutted plenty of deer with out having to resharpen to finish the job.

When I am skinning deer at the house I go get my Dexter beaver knife out of the trapping knife rack. The rounded tip of the blade makes skinning a breeze. I also slice the loins up with it.

For boning I use a Dexter boning knife that I bought when I was working in a grocery store back in the middle 60's.

One warning on the knife in jmr40's first link (amazon) If that sheath clips over your belt they can come off if caught in the brush. I lost one the first trip out with it.

Not all use/like the same style knife. Besides there are to many to choose from. No one could possibly buy /use all that are available.

That being said, my choice is the Buck 110 ,folding. Well built. Stays sharp.

Never had a problem skinning. gutting, what ever.

The one minor draw back for me is after cleaning, gutting shinning...........you have to
really give it a through cleaning. Blood and such gets into the inner parts .

Unlike a straight blade where you can just wipe it off.

No problem though as it`s just part of the process.

I have a bud who maxes out the number of Deer you can take every season. He has taken over 200 deer based on the math.

The week before I took this picture, he had field dressed a deer with this Case Canoe, and had not cleaned it!

He said he bought the Case new in 1964 and had been carrying it ever since. Who knows how many deer he field dressed with the thing.

I gave him several knives, one of which was a cheap knockoff copy of this Grohmann Canadian belt knife. I also gave him a large Grohmann Survival knife which is a much larger version. He liked the Canadian primarily due to the size. The Canadian belt knife was not too big, not too small, fit the hand well, and got into the places he wanted to cut.

If you are ever talking about value for the money, and whether you would be out much if you lost the knife, Mora knives are hard to beat.
