DW Silverback. Finally it's mine - update, range report

Was saving up for a Valor when they introduced this model.

Everything I was looking for awhile back. No FSC, bi tone, adjustable sights, checkered front strap, minimal roll marks.

Took a long time to save for and I nearly spent the cash more than once. but here she is.

I'm not a fan of the grips however. I think it needs a good rich simply checkered rosewood.

Anyone know a good place to buy good wood grips? Good american company - maybe a small shop that could use the cash?

Nice looking gun there.

For a gun called the silverback, it's lacking an angered gorilla face on the slide.

Just my opinion.

Looks like well put together gun, but lack of integral rail is a serious omission.

Not to me. I like the looks of a classic self loader or revolver. Adding junk to the barrel throws off the balance and makes it harder for me to use.

Very nice looking Dan Wesson! Very stylish and I like the target sights as well. I'm partial to Kim Ahrends skip line checkered grips as well as the double diamond design.

Warning: Should you experience any of the following: shortness of breath, elevated heart rate, sweaty palms, or a general feeling of need - proceed immediately to your nearest local Dan Wesson dealer, or visit gunbroker or your favorite online resource, and have your credit card ready.

Range report:
my indoor range is closed for the summer, so I used the outdoor. As usual, some yahoos shot up the target boards, so I had to improvise. Range was approximately 60 feet, offhand, standing position.
Some initial adjustment was necessary to get my onto paper as expected. I worked the gun the night before as suggested in another forum. I field stripped it, oiled with the wesson lube, and reassambled then worked the slide about 300 times. then cleaned and relubed.
Ammo was el-cheapo Remmington bulk pack.
I fired 50 rounds then field stripped and relubed, and fired another 50 rounds
After 100 rounds performance was flawless. no failures to fire, feed, or extract. the extraction was a bit scattered initially, but after a few rounds generally settled in a general area about 6 feet to my 5 oclock position.

accuracy (for me) was nothing short of amazing, I had several targets with all 10 in the black, and a few with almost all touching holes. On average I was able to hold a 2" group. With a rest I am 100% positive I could have shot a 1" group. I've never had a gun (noew or otherwise) shoot factory hardball so well. Trigger at the onset was about 4.75# but extremely clean. no drag, no creep. just apply pressure and click it went. Very concistent feel to it. There is of course some takeup and overtravel, but I never adjsuted the overtravel stop either.

On the whole I cannot point out anything negative. I am not a fan of the grips that arrived with it, but they are as secure in the hand as anything. looks aside, function is perfect.
Function wise the pistol performed every bit as well as I was hoping. Neither supplied mag gave me any trouble, nor did my ruger mags, or the metalforms I brought with me. I tested a total of 6 mags with the gun. The rib on the top of the slide does it's job perfectly, I shot in full daylight with no clouds and high noon sun. painfully bright out. no glare at all. The sights have a clear sight picture and maintaining a 6 o'clock hold was super easy.

Wonderful choice, I've had a few DW Valors, a VBOB, a CBOB and a CCO and for the quality, I'm not sure you can beat a Dan Wesson 1911 for the price!

Smith & Wesson Performance Center 1911 comes to mind. Some even had unusual scandium frames.

I looked at the Smith PC guns. nice - save for I hated the slide cuts. Not hating on the smith per se - just personal on the way they built them. just not for me.

that's a stunning piece....

The grips really go well with the two tone frame.
they're growing on me. I hated them at first. But I'm still going to get a set of checkered rosewood and see how that looks before I make a final decision on keeping them.

as far as the rail goes. I like rails on "tactical" type 1911's. but this baby is perfect just as it is.
