    Mask With CCW

So I go out in public with my big stockman's hat, pulled low over my eyes, and my bandana covering my mouth and nose. The aging Colt, hidden on my person, doesn't show. But any casual stranger is going to take one look at me, and just know it's there. I could have stepped off the set as a...

So any advantages of the a modern rifle in .45-70?

I wonder if they made pocket or inside the waistband holsters for this one? I'll bet even the 9mm worshipers might allow that a hit from one of these might be almost as good as a 9mm hollowpoint. Whether they admitted it or not, the cast bullet would be cheaper. It could be kind of a poor...

So any advantages of the a modern rifle in .45-70?

The 45-70 and other cartridges like it put killing a deer down where you can afford it. With say 3031 powder you can get 200 loads out of a pound of powder, that and a single primer, and a case you can use indefinitely, will put you in business. When that case finally splits, I trim it a...

Best caliber for small game hunting?

I do like the .22 Hornet. I've killed something like thirty wild turkeys with it and a few coyotes. It'll stretch out well beyond a hundred yards, provided there's no wind. It's a little too powerful for things like squirrels and rabbits unless you stick to only head shots. Case life isn't...

What to do With Dead Varmints?

I generally like this idea. You kill it, you eat it. If it's too rough to eat straight, a stew, a gravy works wonders. I have failed, though. Puts me back in the winter of '77. It was a rough winter, eighteen inches of ice in the river, and fifteen below temperatures. Me and Joe were out...

    Best Vintage or older Dies

I still have a usable set of Herter's .243 dies that go back to '56, the year the .243 came out. My father bought them the year he bought a Model 70 .243. If you've ever seen an old Herter's catalog, they assure you their stuff was the very best. Some of it, actually, wasn't so bad.

    Bullseye 38 specail load

Yes, it can cause serious problems. My guess is that if you're asking this you don't have experience reading pressures. You don't want to start with even maximum listed loads. Your particular gun may not handle a maximum listed load. If velocity is what you want a medium load from a slower...

    45 colt or 44 magnum

I have an Colt double action in 38 Long. I had read that they would chamber a .357 just perfectly. They do. Gave me the cold chills when a .357 plunked into the chamber perfectly. It's easier to keep the revolver locked up than to control the ammunition. I suspect too many casual shooters...

    45 colt or 44 magnum

I don't really use the potential versatility of the .45 Colt. I don't want to have the high end loads lying around that a Ruger or a new Marlin could handle that just might in a moment of inattention be slipped into a hundred year old revolver. I've also found that while the .45 Colt can be...

New Revolver... hot off the work-bench

Love it. There's a cache in those old Adams cartridges nothing else quite matches.

    How much is too much?

Your stockpile is a bit low, but I don't hold that against you. You're still a good person. Perhaps some help in answering these kinds of questions would be in order. My girlfriend asks, "How many guns do you have anyway?" "I have no idea. I don't think that way. Ask me in terms of...

Big bore fighting revolvers - a picture thread

A third model hand ejector for under four hundred? I'd call buying that a matter of religious principle. If you're going to shoot it much, you want the larger grips. The originals will cause the gun to rust because even with a lightly loaded .44 Specials you'll end up bleeding. I suspect the...

    Single Action Army Whackjob

I love the single action, but I have to admit my attention wandered before I could finish. His suggestion that a double action revolver couldn't be fired accurately and fast was more than a touch naive. I did look at this pictures, though, especially the one with the secret grip. If you're...

How do I get better at shooting semi-buckhorn sights ?

First, let me compliment you on taking the trouble to learn exactly what you can and cannot do with your rifle offhand. A surprising number of shooters have carried rifles for years and have no clear picture of what they can or can't do. Thus, the number of escaping wounded game. You're way...

Anybody gone back to lead/lubed bullets from coated?

One disappointment I have with my lubricated bullets is that I've never been able to get my hands on any rendered bear lard. Any bear who ever tried to eat me was already too skinny for lard rendering. Animal fats in bullet lube may be obsolete technology, but there's no reason a little of it...
