I am currently in the middle of Hemingway's True at First Light and I think it is a great hunting book, and that every THR member who reads would enjoy it.
I enjoy plinking at clay pigeons at 100-125 yards with a scoped .22 rifle. It isn't pinpoint accuracy (for me at least) but it's fun to break up the pigeons into smaller and smaller shards, and to have to account for windage at that range.
The only relative that I know of who served in the Pacific in WWII was a distant relative on my mother's side, Captain Benjamin Kysor, MD. He was a U.S. Army physician who was killed in the Phillipines by Japanese bombardment in December 1941. His death was described in a Time magazine article...
I had a scope on my 452 Lux and it worked great. I had to purchase the taller scope rings to clear the rear sight. Later, I got a 452 American and transferred the scope to it, so now I shoot the Lux with the iron sights. As others have said, the Lux has really nice iron sights.
Well, carabine automatique is clearly French, and apparently there was a French manufacturer called Gevarm or GEVARMS. Could that be what it says inside the diamond shaped stamping?
Check out Google. The magazines appear to be hard to find. You might check this out too...
I can't get over what a sad story this is. As a parent I my heart goes out to the family. It would be so horrible to have a child die for any reason, but to have it happen as a result of a senseless attack like this is must be beyond comprehension.
The shooters look like they just crawled...
My gripe with the AR is that it costs so much but what you get is a plasticky, aluminum thing that I can't see passing down to me grandkids someday. It just seems like something that ought to cost about $600. Maybe someday they'll be in that price range again.
Yeah I would've called the cops from my cell phone as soon as he either clearly showed signs of driving drunk or (especially) if he followed me or was threatening. And if I didn't have a cell phone I'd sure as heck have called the cops from home as soon as he pulled up and blocked my driveway.
I vote for a bolt action .22, because even after you've acquired other, larger-caliber rifles you'll continue to enjoy shooting the .22 a lot.
I've been very happy with CZ bolt-action .22's. The "452 Lux" model has great iron sights with a sliding rear sight like a Mauser.
