    2018 Hunting Picture Thread

Here's a couple fat sows I shot on my place in NorCal a couple weeks ago. Hard to tell from all the mud but they're both black and white spotted, same with most of the rest of the roughly 40 that were in the herd. I came across them at dusk as the temperature was falling into the low 30's, the...

Hog Survives Behind The Ear Shot

The first hog I ever killed was a nasty big boar - he had both a .223 bullet and a broadhead stuck in his shield that he'd shrugged off sometime before my 270 did him in. Yep, there is a lot of meat over the spine above the neck that a bullet can pass thru without hitting vitals.

Winch for dressing critters - what to use?

This arrived earlier this week and I'm very impressed. It's very solidly built, hard to believe the price given the sturdy construction. My only gripe is that the vertical steel tubing drops down below the level of the receiver - since I have a smaller SUV (BMW X5) it then has little ground...

Winch for dressing critters - what to use?

Thanks all - I just ordered one of the receiver hitch mounted hitches like this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L4Z52BR?pf_rd_p=c2945051-950f-485c-b4df-15aac5223b10&pf_rd_r=DJ1XYJASQ3J7SD9NTVDE Good reviews and price. Should do the trick!

Winch for dressing critters - what to use?

Hi all - I'd like to improve the setup I use to skin critters on my ranch and could use some tips. It's raw land without power or structures. What I currently do is toss a rope over a branch of an oak tree and use to that hang a pulley/gambrel set I got from Cabelas. I then use the pulleys...

Suggestions for loading Barnes TSX in 270/06/30-30?

Well I loaded up a few yesterday and ran into one problem... For the 30-06 I loaded five rounds of H4350 at 54, 55, and 56 grains each (53-57.5 is recommended range). Will try them today. For the 270 I also loaded 5 with H4350 at 50, 51, and 52 grains (49.1-54.5 range). I ran into a problem...

Suggestions for loading Barnes TSX in 270/06/30-30?

I live in CA and need to switch to non-lead fairly soon for my 270, 30-06, and 30-30. I picked up a few boxes of Barnes TSX's that match what I shoot now in those calibers (130, 165, and 150 grains respectively) and need to work up loads - suggestions are highly appreciated! My current loads...

    'Scope choice for AR?

I'm upgrading my AR to be able to shoot out to 500 or so yards, mostly plinking targets for fun but also the errant coyote or other critter that may stray into range. I've ordered a 20" White Oak Varmint upper (1-8 twist) and a Geisele two stage match trigger, now need the optics (something I'm...

AR loads for moderate distance - suggestions?

I've decided to upgrade my basic AR to a decent distance shooting gun. Application will be shooting targets at my ranch in the 300-500 yard range and whacking critters that may wander into same. So far I've ordered a White Oak 20" varmint upper (1/8 twist) and a Geissele match trigger, tbd on...

What is your favorite venison recipie?

Hank Shaw's venison chili is awesome, as are most of the other recipes that he posts on his web site. His venison heart marinade is great too. Also love the wild boar chilendron. http://honest-food.net/2011/05/10/venison-chili/

    No Hunting Merit Badge?

I've been involved in Scouting for almost 40 years and have never seen a "hunting" merit badge. Used to be a "rifle and shotgun shooting" badge, this was then divided into two badges maybe 15 years ago. I have seen an old BS handbook from about the 30s (??) that had many badges that reflected...

    Losing desire to hunt

My ranch has a big pond on it and I've jumped ducks on it for years, This year I stopped doing it - just didn't feel the desire to do so. Part of it was the lack of need (two kids off to college, so we don't go thru protein like we used to!), part was just preferring to watch them paddle...
