I own a rifle built on a Remington 700 action. The other day someone remarked, "I see you have one of the old ones with the 2 screws for receiver sights" It made me curious about when the receiver was made. The serial number is B6299875. Any idea about when it might have been made?
I can't say for sure what it is. I have two guesses.
1. Someone is trying to send me a shipment of caviar and is hiding it in there.
2. A friend offered this explanation;
"wet tumbling media". After the slugs are produced they are tumbled and very often they add a liquid cleaning agent to...
This is ammo that I have bought and paid for from a well known ammo manufacturer. (not Winchester)
3 boxes of hard cast lead had 30% of the bullets that looked like this:
Not to worry. I contacted the manufacturer and they offered to send me a free box of ammo to make up for my "inconvenience"...
SAKO AV 375 H&H with a Kahles Helia C 1.1-4x24mm w/ German #4 reticle. Lightweight, custom Rimrock stock. Africa trip was cut and the rifle has been in the safe ever since. :uhoh:
I usually carry a Glock 27 .40S&W. It is thin enough, that I carry it in an IWB holster (Galco King Tuk). I just bought a Glock 30 .45acp. It is thicker than the Glock 27 and I have my doubts that it would work well IWB. Do any of you carry a G30 concealed and what have you found to be a...
I carry a G27, 40S&W in an IWB holster. It carries well, and conceals well. I use a paddle holster for the range and when I can open carry in the outback. I just got a Glock 30 and it seems too thick for comfortable IWB carry. Does anyone have experience with the G30/G29 in IWB carry? Was it...
I bought a Galco King Tuk for my Glock 27. . Seems very well made and very comfortable. I sold off a Sparks Versa Max II because it didn't work well for me. The Sparks has all sorts of positive reviews by owners. It felt bulky to me and difficult to put on and take off. The Galco was about $45...
The Lyman appeals to me because it is closer to what I think a black powder rifle should look like. The TC is a little overdressed. I was just wondering if there was some great difference in quality or accuracy.
Thanks,

I have a chance to pick up either a used Lyman Great Plains 54 cal percussion or a used Thompson Center Hawken .54 percussion. Assuming the price and condition are the same, what are the opinions of both these rifles. The only use I am considering is to get my feet wet in the black powder world...
Jon,
All the products that I mentioned will work on a parked gun. What have you tried so far to protect the gun from rust or remove the rust? What happened?

I use a product called Eezox. Start out with some on a rag and see how much rust comes off. If you need an abrasive, I agree with the others, use 0000 steel wool or a hard to find item called Big 45 Frontier Gun Shop Gun Metal Cleaner.
