I have made a lot of shot for trap shooting. I used antifreeze and water mix for coolant. I dropped it about 1/4 inch to coolant. The shot wasn't perfectly round, but I couldn't tell any difference between it and factory loads on the trap line. They both busted targets. I talked to a guy on the...
Most of the Savage Axis I have looked at come with either a Nikon or Bushnell scope. Not a top line scope but serviceable. You might want to check on that.

These are the 2 sources I used when answering my bro in law about this.
On my Ruger American the bolt is marked with the same serial # as the rifle. That could be a way to determine if it is the bolt that came with the rifle from Ruger.
One thing I have done to make punching holes in targets more fun is have a little competition. Once I am comfortable with their safety I have everyone pay a dollar for a target and 5 shots. They shoot 1 at a time and I score the targets. The high score wins the pot. Seems to go over big with the...
The Savage Axis comes with a decent scope. Not top line by any means, but it can be upgraded later as money permits. The website says a Nikon. Not sure witch model. I would go with .308 personally but caliber is a personal choice. A .270 or 30-06 would both be good choices also.
I shoot in the summer and spring when it is nice outside so I can reload in the winter when it is too cold to shoot. Or it could be phrased the other way. I enjoy doing both.
My wife is 4'9" and weighs about 100. We bought her a Savage Axis compact in 243. She shoots it just fine and very accurate. 243 is what I would recommend.

My daughter and her husband came out. We grilled steaks and corn and then blasted targets with my mini 14 and .308. Her husband had never fired a gun before and he had a blast. Looks like we got another one in our ranks.
Trap shooting is a lot of fun. I shot ATA for 5 or 6 years until a shoulder injury put me out for several years. Now money keeps me out for now. As for aiming or pointing my best advice is to do what works for you. I close 1 eye because if they are both open I see double birds. It can be a...
