Who uses a single shot for deer

Although my hunting days are now behind me, at one time I used a Jeffery's falling block Farqueson action 450/400 cal. single barrel rifle. Most of my shooting was "for the pot" and I never needed a rapid second shot. This was in mopani bush country, mainly hunting Kudu where about 100 yards was...

Do you trust your electronic scale?

NOT the Frankford Arsenal DS-750 which I bought from Midway! Totally packed up after about 6 months. I have written it off as overpriced Chinese junk and am staying with beam scales.

    1911 slide-stop malfunction

Thanks rcmodel for for your helpful reply. I have tested the gun with the recoil spring out as suggested and there is only one point where the slide-stop comes out and that is when in line with the disassembly notch. I am using 200gr cast round-nose over a charge of 5.8gr of Somchem MS200...

    1911 slide-stop malfunction

I have now twice encountered a malfunction with the slide-stop on my Series 70 Colt 1911. It first occurred some 2 years ago when the slide-stop worked loose while firing and came about a quarter of an inch out, resulting in a totally jammed pistol. I put in a new slide-stop and everything...

    Warning shots?

As a 75 year old guy in a violent country I am not going to discuss or wrestle with an intruder in the dark. He has broken into my house and threatened my life, not the other way around. 2 shots to center of mass, no statements to the police, and let the lawyers argue about it.

    Scale gone bad

Thanks for the tip re ziplock bags with a kinetic bullet puller - I shall use it from now on. Re electronic scales; I bought the Frankford Arsenal DS-750 from Midway and it worked OK for about 7 months, then started giving erratic readings and finally stopped working at all. This was not a...

I notice now most of us older guys (50+)

Old shooters just hang in! At the benchmark of 75 this thread prompted me to look back. I truly can't remember all the guns I have had, given away, sold, swapped etc. Some do however stick in my mind; among them are a 450/400 Jeffreys nitro-express Farqueson action rifle which I sold to a...

    Homemade BP

You can make pretty good BP by the precipitation method. It simply won't be as powerful as the commercial stuff though unless you compress, grind and granulate it. This process is where most of the explosions in the old powder mills occurred and I prefer to give it a miss myself.

    muzzle loader/patched round ball question

I use over powder wads on top of the powder charge. This keeps the powder from contamination and largely prevents patch "burn-through". I punch them out of old cardboard cartons with a hollow punch.

Ream Ruger 9mm "convertible" cylinder to .357

I have a .357 "convertible" Ruger Blackhawk with the .357 cylinder missing. Is it feasible to ream the 9mm adaptor cylinder to take .357?

When you've held your tongue for just long enough....

Give the old guy a break, he probably half-believes his own stories. Unless he does something really harmful let him live on in his little dream world. I am sure you don't want to get him fired!

    Screwdriver recommendation

Lots of good stuff available. Personally I like Chapmans.

Would you open carry a BP revolver?

With the greatest respect to all contributers to this thread, what you carry when your life is on the line is your personal choice. I have a number of BP revolvers and have very few misfires - I have also had misfires from centre fire guns when one hits the occasional dud primer; less misfires...

Would you open carry a BP revolver?

All "might happen" stuff here. BP is fun, but in real life I feel comfortable with my .45 acp tucked away out of view.

    Ruger BlackHawk Help!

Careful here - I understand that Ruger policy is to modify all older models sent in for repair by fitting transfer bars. You may not be too happy with this when you get it back.
