Since Jan. 17, 2006, I have carried my 642 in a Robert Mika round cut pocket holster. One of the best decisions/purchases I've ever made. If you buy a Mika holster, you will not be disappointed.

I'm very partial to my S&W 642 snubbie. I also like my Rossi 3" .357. Due to the elegance of a revolver, there are so many "best" choices.

I realize I'm late with this reply, but I have had no problems like you've described. It's a good question and something to keep it mind as humidity is almost always with us down here.
