    Marlin 336, 1911, and an 870. good all-around combo?

I'd say you're covered just great. Nice selection of traditional firearms that have stood the test of time. I don't see mag capacity as an overwhelming issue in most SHTF-type scenarios anyway -- the capacity of the ones you listed will be fine. Now all that's left is training and practice!

I finally bought a large caliber, long range, rapid fire, military weapon.

Halffast: Just a beautiful rifle. Glad you're giving it a good home, and maybe someday I'll get one like it (I can dream?). I was gonna make some lighthearthed jokes but really, levity is inappropriate in the presence of that kind of history, beauty, and craftsmanship. Thanks for...

    Being Cased

In my limited number of encounters with the bad guys of the world, I've concluded that the overwhelming majority of the time I would have had plenty of advance warning of the impending Bad Thing, if only my radar was properly tuned. I've since dedicated a lot more time to observation of human...

    Long arms for home defense?

M1 Carbine Just seems to be good enough for the job. I find it hard to fantasize scenarios (in my specific life/circumstances, etc) where the M1 Carbine will fail but a shotgun would suceed. Someday I'll put an optical sight on it and really enjoy the juxtaposition of old tech and new...

    CMP Pricing on M1 Carbine

Yep - what SaMx said I think the price is fair and I'm filling out my application this weekend to buy my allocation for this year. Next year, I'll buy another one (would like more but budget limits me a bit). I enthusiastically support the CMP -- no gunshop know-it-alls, no dickering over...

    M1 Garand and Carbine

Count me as another fan of the CMP; I've got 2 M1 Garands, 1 1903 Springfield, and will soon be ordering an M1 Carbine from them. Great organization, great people.

    CMP and Notary...

I went to the local Kinko's copy place It cost a couple of bucks but I was in and out the door in 3 minutes so I was good with that. I was sort of expecting a 3rd degree about what I was doing with the form, what I was buying, (*gasp* a rifle, by mail order?) along with some amount of...

For Taurus 605 and 85 owners

I own a 605 and have it by my bedside every night. Great gun; wouldn't change a thing about it. It's a bit "brisk" with full-house magnum loads so don't get too enthusiastic! The things I like about it are: it's stainless, it will accept .357 loads (though .38 +P are more comfortable), it's...

    Ever been "jack-lighted"?

I still think you did the most important thing exactly right: you stood up to danger when many would have run away (or hid in the house until -- IF -- the bad guys went away). Proved you are *not* a sheep. The rest is nit-picking over tactics. Good work!

Who taught you How to Reload?

Bought the Speer and Nosler manuals and a bunch of RCBS gear. Started with low power loads at the bottom end of the power range (.38/.357 Mag). I messed up a few along the way but I just went slow and double checked everything against the two books. It's a fun hobby.

    Ever been "jack-lighted"?

I hope the adrenaline has faded by now.... A couple of hints from my armchair keyboard: 1. Warning the operator that there will "probably be a shooting" could have been used against you in court if you actually *had* to shoot. It might have been safer to just state that you're armed and...

The only safer sport is chess.

This concept is great stuff, Oleg. I agree with your fixes of using a juvenile with eye/ear protection. Maybe future versions could superimpose a "minuteman" silouette in the background for not-so-subtle hints?

Anyone seen one of the Dane Garands the CMP is substituting for the Greek FG m1's

I just received a Danish "less wood". The metal looks near new and the barrel is a VAR -- can't wait to get it in shooting shape. My plan is to fit it out with a CMP-cartouched stock and have fun. I can't vouch for all the rifles but I've been very happy with the three I have.

    Stop Touching My Blade!

For me, I think it comes down to educating the other guy. If I already know he's a knife aficionado and understands the care put into a properly sharpened knife, then fine. There are ways to check blade sharpness: the hanging hair test, thumbnail test, wet thumb test, etc. If someone is...

    The 336 Club

Oh man...you guys are killing me. I used to own a 336 but in a fit of stupidity I sold it. Now I have to buy another one. Great rifles! I'm envious.
