+1 on Marlin

I picked the 30-06, only due to the wide variety of loads you have available for it and if I was only to have one gun. There is nothing right or wrong with any of those calibers.

Don't overlook the Marlin X7 rifle.

I'm going to throw in the call to get a Marlin. They only make one centerfire, so they are not economizing their flagship to get in the economy market. I have three, all are sub-moa shooters. For barrel length, a 22" will be just fine on a 308, if want a longer barrel, then do a heavy barrel...

Here's one more question: when you sight in at whatever you do with a variable power scope, do you dial in to the highest power? I uses 3-9 power scopes and seem to have better groups dialed in around 6-7; based on 100 yards.

I just use the 3" high at 100 yard theory. If trajectories hold true, the bullet should not rise above 3.5" or drop below 3.5" out to nearly 300 yards. That'll put meat in the freezer. The calibers I use are 270, 280, 7mm-08, & 30-06.

Ruger Hawkeye

Has anyone tried a Burris E1? I'm pleased with the Fullfield II I have on a 7mm-08, even with the oddity of the whole eyepiece turning to adjust the power.
