LOL, no worries -- I kinda ninja-ed it on there. The optic is a Trijicon Reflex 42mm with 6.5 MOA (pretty sure it's 6.5 at least...) dual-illuminated dot (fiber optic + tritium). Ran me $460 on Amazon -- MSRP is $650, so I consider that a win. :D
FYI - Earlier, someone had posted concerns regarding cycling after the barrel had been cut down. I am happy to report that I have had exactly - ZERO - problems with the weapon before or after the barrel was cut down. However, I will post an update if anything comes up.
It all comes down to preference, my man. Could HK sell their stuff at lower prices? Absolutely. But, as someone so helpfully put it earlier, they're in this game to make money too. Whether their products are better than everyone else's products or not is immaterial: that is the perception...
I can back FIVETWOSEVEN up on that: we currently pay $460 for an M4 (with quad rail, etc.) from Knight's Armament. Aside from the select fire feature however, there's nothing fancy about a military M4. Nyresq is right about price inflation for the civilian market. However, the sheer volume of...
JustinJ, question for you: I noticed you only mentioned three (3) 922c compliance parts, which ones make up the other two (2)? I ask because I just got my USC and want to do literally exactly the same thing you've done and plan to do. Also, which vendors would you recommend to buy the parts from?
Finally done! The gunsmithing cost $160. The guy said he didn't have any problems re-threading the barrel and (as far as I can tell) he didn't have to remove the barrel from the receiver, he just clamped the receiver and cut the barrel that way. Here's the finished product:

So I just checked out SIG's website last night, and it seems they are now marketing (by popular demand, no doubt) factory SBR editions of all their main battle rifles (except the 556R). My project seems somewhat diminished now...
Thanks - I took that into account before I did it. My back yard is more of a swamp than anything else and the ground is incredibly soft. If I thought there was a chance of skipping bullets, I would have found another solution.
MSG - Thanks for the heads up on the 556R! Mine is still on order from the factory, but when I get it I will definitely post my impressions for you. Happy Holidays!
As soon as the stamp gets here, yup. Should be about January or so I'm guessing... As far as further modifications are concerned, I don't think I'm going to do anything short of removing the front sight. I've got a SIG 556R on order which will be my next project. I'll post a new thread once I...
Okay, after much ridiculousness, here it is! :D Thanks for the help everyone!
P.S. Thanks for the heads up on the metadata Wally -- I fortunately have a camera new enough to take good pictures, but old enough not to have GPS on it! As for thieves, I have only this to say: I pity the fool.
MSG,
Firstly, thanks for the link! Secondly, I've decided to go against the grain and do #1. I picked up a 556 Patrol (standard model) for $1089 new from a local shop. I then picked up a Trijicon Reflex sight (6.5 MOA dual illuminated - Fiber optics + Tritium) from Amazon new for $460. I sighted...
