    What is a carbine?

The Ak-47 is not defined as rifle by the Russians. Nor is it called a carbine. It's called "Avtomat" just like the PPSh-41. That's the the role the AK-47 was designed for.

Why did the Nazi's or whoever switch from the 7x57 to 7.9x57

With the bullet designed back then, against humans, I'm sure the 8mm Mauser was more lethal than the 7mm Mauser. Another aspect not mentioned yet in this thread is the platform that shot them. The few weapons available, capable of repeating fire, (the new machine guns), were large, heavy...

Am I the only one that thinks these are ugly?

To the OP. I see this the other way around. It is you that didn't adapt to the natural changes and evolution in firearms. We all know by now that those species that can adapt to the constant changing environment around them, are the ones that have the best chances of survival.

Taking Back the Infantry Half-Kilometer: A critique.

THe 5.56x45mm was not the result of serious testing and research to find a good intermediate assault rifle cartridge. 5.56x45mm is no intermediate cartridge. It wasn't designed to be one. It's the millitary version of a varmint cartridge. The 5.56mm M16 was intended to be a replacement...

    Ak-47 v.s m14 (m1a)

One was the firearm with shortest life as US main rifle, the other is the most widely used firearm on the planet. Draw your own conclusion.

Semi-Auto Rifles: The "Range Toy" Lie?

Semiauto rifles are mature, very reliable tools. I look at manual reloading like i look at manually shifting gears in cars. Something the machines got pretty good at doing reliably. Why shift your way through gears for day to day driving if you don't have to. In the past, auto transmissions were...

9 million piston guns can't be wrong.

There's a distinctive difference in what most people call DI and gas piston setup. Where the hot smoke goes after it cycled the action. --- In DI it is "vented" in the middle of the rifle, that is best kept clean, cool and lubricated. --- In a piston system the hot smoke is vented out of...

Why is a SCAR so expensive?

Hard to get the circumstances FAL was brought up in. There was a revolutionary new way of thinking about the combat rifle, there was a new aliance and a new generally adopted cartridge. The FAL was a great revolutionary rifle that showed up in the exact time everyone was looking for a new...

    First "Fun Gun"

The only thing in common between Vz58 and AK is the cartridge. Vz58 has more in common with the german K43 and Mp44 than with the AK. And yes, the AK is a gas piston rifle.:)

    First "Fun Gun"

Black SGL31 in 5.45x39. Top quality AK. Decent accuracy. Good, looks, super reliable and shoots the cheapest centerfire rifle cartridge you can buy. The rifle may be about $100 over your price, but you'll quickly save that in ammo.
