All .308 AR designs are NOT piston driven. There are gas guns. Dpms for example.

If you go the 1-4x route you should really check out the vortex viper pst 1-4x24. They go for $499 and seem to have excellent reviews (I love mine) and the best warrantee in the business.

It seems, to me at least, that an ar15 can be made plenty accurate without needing to resort to that.

If you are not scared of buying a used optic I would check out SWFA's samplelist.com. They have some pretty good deal pop up on there if you check back regularly. I have bought from them and have nothing but good things to say.

If it were me, I would check samplelist.com and wait for a used aimpoint to pop up in your price range. I have done business with them before with good results.
