I paid close to $300 for my 870 express, I was 18 and didn't know any better. Last year I picked up a older Wingmaster for about $150. Pawnshops are the way to go. I like the Wingmaster alot better. It feels smoother and is just alot sexier.

Wal Mart sells the brass cased Winchester for about $10 per 20 round box. I bought a bunch of this one time when nothing else was around but it is about 3x the cost of Wolf or Silver Bear. Unless you want the brass to reload, I would look somewere else.

I'll second the 686. My dad has a 4" and it has the best single action trigger I have shot. I see 4" 686's used all the time for $350-$400. You should be able to find a 3" model if that's what you really want.

I have problems with dog hair. One of my 870s is kept between the bed and the wall. I guess alot of dust and hair accumulate here and in my shotgun. I have to take it apart every couple of months and clean it, and it rarely gets shot.
