Like jmr40, I traded my extended eye relief set up on my Savage Scout for conventional variable. In my case a Leupold 2x for a Vortex 2-7x 35. Worked much better for me, both from ability to "find" the target in the scope as well as better look at targets farther down range. Paid off well on...
By "dragoon" grip, do you mean the one that is flat at the back of the trigger guard? I've heard those tend to "grab" the middle finger on the grip. I've had the same problem with a Blackhawk (.327) and 4 5/8" in SBH - both of which had/have round trigger guard. OTH, I have a SBH Hunter which...
I really like SBH's also. With .44 mag, I don't see any advantage in DA over SA...you still have to get the muzzle down and can thumb back the hammer as that is happening. So, in that caliber, I'd say you are good to go! I remember an old artical by Brian Pierce years ago about using SA for...
I recently acquired a 4 5/8 SBH. While I like the grip on the SBH Hunter, the grip on the 4 5/8 is somewhat smaller and did not work well for me. I put a Hogue Monogrip on it with great results. Fills the hand better and prevents banging your middle finger against the trigger guard. The...
amlevin, thanks for the link. That sounds much better than my eyeball method.
Regarding your comment about military brass in .308 for hunting, I've come to the same conclusion after I started looking at the numbers the lighter loads were likely to yield. Looks like the velocity at 100...
Follow up: measurements
Here are the numbers on the rounds I handloaded:
1. COAL = 2.809 - 2.810
2. Sized Case length = 2.010
3. Loaded round neck diameter = 0.430 (measured at end of neck)
These are all within specs. I try measuring where the leades are by using the rifle's bolt to "press" a...
1. Case length under 2.005, but I will recheck.
2. COAL = 2.809 (listed on load data is 2.810)
3. I will have to check neck diameter. Unfired reloads did go into bolt action chamber easily and extracted easily.
I did neck size only as rounds will only go through my bolt action Savage and...
Thanks for the unput. I did not pay much attention to the brand of primers, did not think that would make a big difference but will keep that in mind. I did check the brass prior to reloading, it was well within specs for length. As for OAL, I set that .001 under the published OAL limit...
I am trying to work up a hunting load for my .308. Components are:
1. once fired brass from military surplus ammo I have fired
2. Barnes 165 gr. TSX BTHP
3. CCI Large Rifle primers
4. H4895 powder
It was hard for me to find data for the TSX - I finally located a Barnes reloading Manual...
+1 for K9 stainless. I've had mine several years. It conceals well, points well, with a smooth trigger. The pull is long and takes some getting used to if you shoot 1911's. The ONLY thing I don't like is the mags will shed cartridges when carried in a mag carrier (at least the Bagmaster...
"In San Antonio, 90-ish miles south of Austin, Alex Hamilton of 10-Ring Precision"
Have had two revolvers receive action jobs from Alex. He does excellent work. You can find his web page online if you google his name or 10-Ring.
I tried, starting about 1 year ago, to get a replacement hammer spring for the Taurus Model 94 .22. I have yet to receive it. I called several times and each time was told that the part would have to come from Brazil and that I should keep checking. I gave up this June after 5 calls. The...
I have some once-fired brass from some Israili .308 surplus that I shot a few years ago. I never had a problem with the 63 or so rounds I shot through my Savage bolt action. Now that I am starting to reload and live in a state that allows centerfire high power rifles for hunting, I tumbled the...
