Why it's time to stop recommending 308Win, tips for new "long range" shooters.

I can agree with the Original Poster. However the rifle I wanted was only available in .308 Win. ( Steyr SSG 69 PII )

rarest caliber in a pre-64 model 70 winchester?

LOL Sorry bout that! Jack O'Conner was a mandatory read for me every summer when school was out. I'd lay on the bed in direct window unit A/C and read it during the hottest part of the day. Started when I was in 3rd grade he captivated me so much.

I know some of the Model 54s were chambered in 30/30 Win, Were they not in Model 70 early production?

Driftwood, I am interested in the Schofeld caliber, can it be resized and seated with a 45 Colt die with adjustment (like a .357 die with .38 spl) or better if I get a new set of dies?

Listen to ol' Driftwood, He has forgotten more on BP than I'll ever learn and is a solid source of info!

OK to use Goex FFg BP in pistols?

Very close in accuracy. BP is more consistent than most realize. Also, Do not use regular gun oil to clean or lube, as the petroleum products well adhere to the charcoal ash and make a hard tar. I found Ballistol mixed with water ala "Moose Milk" to be the easiest to clean with. Water is the...

OK to use Goex FFg BP in pistols?

No, just straight on the powder. The 35 grain load in modern cases will compress about a sixteenth of an inch generally with a 250 grain lead bullet. 40 grains just under an eighth of an inch. Be sure to use a bullet lubed by an black powder lube such as SPG. The smokeless waxy lube can tar up...

35-40 grains by volume. If you have the Lee powder dippers it is the 2.2cc for 35grns and 2.5 for 40 grns. Black powder MUST be compressed!

I shoot 3FG until I'm out and then going to try 2FG in my .45 Colt Cimarron. A 40 grn charge of 3FG Olde Eynsford out of the 5 1/2 in barrel averaged 1027 FPS with 250 grn Big Lube.

Looking for 45 Colt pet load.

Same here. 40 grains volume(2.5cc) of 3FG Olde Eynsford and 250 grn Big Lube. Thumper on both ends!

Have reloaded smokeless powder for years, want to try some BP loads...

If you have the Lee powder dippers use the 2.2cc for a 35 grain by volume for Black Powder and you will get a full compression load eqaulivent to the original 1873 spec load. 2.5cc will get you at 40 grains and need to drop it from a little height to pack it in with heavy crimp. Actual old load...
