Looking for advice: shotgun for sporting clays

Hello all, I was recently invited to shoot sporting clays with a friend. I’m hooked, and now want to buy a suitable semi-automatic shotgun. I am very familiar with pistols and rifles, but not so much with shotguns. The shotguns I own are a Remington 870 pump 12-gauge and a 60-year old...

Seeking advice on 6.5 Creedmoor rifle + scope ($1000)

Last update: I really like this rifle and scope. Attached 3 shot group is from today at 100 yards with Hornady ELD Match 140 grains over 41.0 grains of IMR 4451. Thanks again for all your help.

Seeking advice on 6.5 Creedmoor rifle + scope ($1000)

I finally got to the range, but only for a short time due to an approaching thunderstorm. I am impressed so far, but haven't had a chance to shoot at longer ranges yet. I was able to break in the barrel according to Bergara's process (shoot five rounds and clean the barrel after each shot...

Hornady Ammunition Brass vs. Hornady Brass

Hello folks, Just wondering if you've noticed a difference between Hornady brass sold with their ammunition and Hornady brass sold for handloading. I'm just starting to handload 6.5 Creedmoor. I am working on building up a quantity of brass that I will use for handloading. I'm wondering if...

Seeking advice on 6.5 Creedmoor rifle + scope ($1000)

Just a quick update. I received my new Bergara B-14 Hunter chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor today. With a set of Talley integrated base rings, I mounted an Athon Argos BRT 6-24x50mm scope with MIL reticle. I have to say, I'm very impressed so far with both the rifle and the scope. The scope...

Seeking advice on 6.5 Creedmoor rifle + scope ($1000)

Thanks for the inputs on MIL vs MOA optics. I'll freely admit I'm learning here--I didn't even realize MIL dots existed as a unit of angular measurement. I had assumed it was simply a military-style reticle. I read up on optics tonight. Google helped me find a great write up on practical...

Seeking advice on 6.5 Creedmoor rifle + scope ($1000)

So it appears that Savage 10 FV from Cabela's is a really, really popular bargain. The rifle was backordered when I bought it. A week later, I don't have a ship date. I started to think I may not receive this rifle before the 1 April suspense date for mailing off the rebate (it requires the...

Seeking advice on 6.5 Creedmoor rifle + scope ($1000)

Thanks for the feedback. I'd really like to shoot regularly out to 1000 yards, but I'm limited by ranges close by. Most of my shooting will be 100-200 yards at local ranges with the occasional trip to the Talladega CMP range for 600 yard shooting.

Seeking advice on 6.5 Creedmoor rifle + scope ($1000)

Awesome feedback so far, folks. Thank you very much. I just bought the Savage 12 VT that Varminterror mentioned above. I read up on it and the reviews are all positive. I've also enjoyed the two Savage rifles I've owned in the past. At $269 after Cabela's rebate, that was hard to pass up...

Seeking advice on 6.5 Creedmoor rifle + scope ($1000)

Folks, I'm interested in buying a new rifle and scope combo for around $1000 total. I would appreciate your advice. A bit of background on me: I consider my rifle skills somewhere around intermediate heading towards advanced. I own .22LR, AR-15, and .30-06 rifles and have shot thousands of...

Toying with a Ruger M77 for accuracy

Awesome feedback with some great ideas. I also appreciate the blunt feedback on not messing with a gun that’s already pretty accurate. Having said that, this is a project gun. I bought it to tinker. Thanks for the ideas!

Toying with a Ruger M77 for accuracy

Hello all, I have a 1979 production Ruger M77 with tang safety chambered in 30-06. This has been a project gun for me. I may use it for hunting in the future. I bought it with a beat up stock for next to nothing. I’ve since sanded/stained/sealed the stock, added a decent Redfield scope to it...

Please tell me about vibrating tumbler media ...

I just bought the Franklin Arsenal tumbler kit from midway after using an ultrasonic cleaner for 9+ months. It came with 3 pounds of corn cob media and Franklin Arsenal's "brass polish" This is my first vibrating tumbler, and I know very little about them and the media used in them, but after...

    Rifle Optic Questions

RANGE UPDATE: Wow, holy cow! I bought, mounted, and zeroed the Redfield 3-9x40mm scope. I picked up a front/rear pair of sand bags to try instead of the lead sled. Yikes, what a difference! First, I shot some remaining loads I had laying around: 150g Sierra Gameking Spitzers with 51.0g of...

    Rifle Optic Questions

Thanks for all the great responses. After reading the responses in this thread, I ended up buying a Redfield 3-9x40mm scope. This is one of the new-production ones coming from Leupold's plant in Oregon. I picked it up off gunbroker.com for $155 (including shipping). I'd like to get a...
