I like my SS Tracker
I own a SS Tracker .44 Mag with 4" barrel. It has a smooth action and excellent SA and DA trigger pulls. The ported barrel is very efficient at reducing recoil and muzzle jump. The stock ribbed rubber grips absorb recoil as well. The felt recoil is noticeably less than...
I purchased my Ruger 77 in 1980. I glass bedded the walnut stock and floated the barrel. I have hunted in all kinds of weather and at elevations ranging from 5,000 to 12,500 feet. My M77 has not changed zero with my preferred load since I sighted it in the first time.
How is that possible...
Good overall summary by the OP of several important principles in terminal ballistics.
I have one minor nitpick with the OP's statement that flat point bullets are best in the brush. That is a myth that was laid to rest decades ago after extensive testing by the US military, the big ammo...
Glock 20 and S&W 629 are great trail guns.
During 45 years of hiking and backpacking in the SW and in the Rockies, I have carried the following for self defense while on the trail: S&W Model 19 .357 mag, S&W 629 .44 mag, Taurus Tracker (5 shot) .44 mag, a a Glock 20 in 10 mm, and bear...
Use of pistols not issued by US Army (anything other than 1911) was often prohibited.
My father was in the US Army Rangers during WWII and fought in France and Germany during 1944 until wounded in action. He was a 1st Lt and led groups doing scouting, recon, and forward observation (for...
Congratulations to the OP on your model 19 revolver. It is an excellent revolver with the added benefits of an interesting history and some good memories.
I owned a model 19 with a 4" barrel, and I carried it for more than 30 years as one of my preferred "trail" or "woods" guns. It was more...
I agree with the OP. A 4" barrel (or even 5") .454 would be a much better choice than the 2.5" barrel. If a 4" barrel version were available, there would be no real practical advantage or reason for preferring the 2.5" barrel.
I even have a suggestion for a name for the 4" version. Call it...
I agree with the critics who say the current design sometimes has problems with expanding too soon and too much when the bullet encounters a hard barrier such as a car door or a windshield. Such problems may be inherent with this kind of design.
A careful review of ballistic gelatin tests of...
Red Cent,
It is not my intention to disparage SA revolvers. As far as I know there are no finer revolvers built than the Freedom Arms SA revolvers, and many high quality SA revolvers have also been built by Ruger, Colt, and other makers. There is no reason for anyone to think that DA...
I have owned and fired both SA and DA revolvers in .22 LR, .357 mag, and .44 mag. Most of my revolver shooting has been in the SA mode even when I'm using a DA revolver. This is especially true when shooting full power magnum loads.
The main advantages of a DA revolver are: (1) ease of...
I have the same problem with stock fit. When mounting a Pach Decelarator pad on a Ruger 77 stock, I also mounted a 1/4" black spacer made by Pach. Since the Dec. pad was 1/4" thicker than the original Ruger pad, I increased the LOP by 1/2". But I still needed an additional .75" for an ideal...
The .44 may be a little better with lighter weight jacketed expanding bullets.
I have never owned a .45 of any kind, but I have owned several .44 Mag revolvers. I have also fired quite a few .45 Colt revolvers owned by friends.
I think the two cartridges are pretty close to being equivalent...
The mini reflex RDS is the best all around sight for the older shooter.
I have used a S&W Model 41, 686, and 629 with the Bushnell Trophy red/green dot sight, a Nikon red dot sight, a j-point sight, and a 2x long relief handgun scope made by Bushnell.
I currently own a S&W 629 with 4" barrel...
Quote from jmstevens2: "Actually, the Marines have Drill Instructors. The Army has Drill Sergeants."
I knew that. Thanks for reminding me. Actually, my father was a 1st Lt. when he trained Rangers for the US Army. That's why I referred to him as an instructor. My use of the term "DI" was...
