If you get a PTR without the rail welded on it from the factory, prepare to spend some money mounting glass. You have claw mounts which are expensive (the good ones STANAG) and have a very high mount, but allow for irons and glass. The MFI rail is cheaper and also works but like the welded...

Accurate, reliable to a fault, nose heavy, some say abrupt recoil for an automatic (I disagree), and it chews the hell out of your brass (use steel for plinking). That's the PTR in a nutshell.

I stand corrected, by "gas tube" I meant the piston (though upon second thought, the piston may have been chromed...I didn't remove it and look) and by "receiver" I meant the chamber. Thanks helping to clarify, I've edited the above post.

If you're looking for an inexpensive (relatively speaking) fixed stock AK, I should mention that the gunshop guys showed me a CAI, 100% US made AK with a milled receiver. Despite not having a chrome lined chamber or barrel, the action and trigger on the gun were excellent. Very, very smooth...

Right, I see both are chrome lined, both 1:7 twist, etc. I'm guessing the difference between the two is marginal for semi-auto fire unless shooting tens of thousands or rounds...but I cannot find a side by side comparison anywhere. :banghead:

Okay guys, looking into getting a BCM middy but there is a $100 option for a cold hammer forged barrel or the standard chrome lined govt. barrel. I know cold hammer forged is supposed to be the "go to" for AKs but how about for ARs? Are the benefits really tangible on lightweight bullets...

@W.E.G. If I had transferred the rifle, it would have become a warranty issue and cut Atlantic Arms options. Since I didn't transfer it, they (Atlantic) are sending me a new one, not KVAR/Arsenal. Also I don't need to fire a rifle to look at it and see the barrel is bent. @Trent by "massive"...

Good info, thanks Sam. Kind of confirms my suspicions that this rifle cannot be "repaired" only "rebuilt" from the ground up. Essentially it's a pile of parts at this point.
