+1 to Federal "value pack" 100-round boxes of birdshot, (3 dram 1 1/8 oz load, 7 1/2 shot). This is the lightest stuff that will reliably cycle in my Saiga-12. It works fine.. but the el cheapo Winchester does not.

I find 8-round mags to be the ideal combination of reasonable length and decent shell capacity. Izhmash, (OEM), 8-round mags are the best available, but they're extremely scarce in the States, (thank you BATFE), so when some do surface for sale, the usual asking price is ~$120-$150 apiece...

You're right, the vented Polychoke II is pretty long. Since taking those pics, I've sold it, and have a shorter, non-vented Polychoke on the way.

So it seems to me that ideally you'd train with, (or watch the videos of), both Gabe Suarez, (on how to best use a more ideal combat shotgun, the S-12), and Clint Smith, (so you could more effectively use whatever's available).

Personally I think the reason that most people don't like pistol grips on pump-guns is that they weren't really designed for it, so it doesn't feel that "natural". Imo, if you want a shotgun with a pistol grip, get a Saiga-12 and convert restore it, (from the "sporter" config the damnable...

The shortest S-12 you'll find, (from the OEM anyway), is a IZ-109 with a 19" barrel. Custom S-12's with 8", 10", or 12" barrels do exist, but you'd need a sbs tax stamp and a fair amount of patience to get one, (the companies that convert a standard S-12 to that have a waiting list of several...

If your budget were a few hundred dollars higher, you'd have a lot more options, (semi-autos).

Afaik, springs do not fatigue by simply remaining compressed. What wears em out is repeated compression and expansion. It shouldn't harm anything to simply leave your gun's mag loaded. Of course, to unload my favored scatter-gun, (S-12), I simply remove the magazine from the receiver. ;)
