I too am looking to see what is out there. I recently acquired a Remington 700 (circa 1984) in 30-06 that has an older Leupold 3-9 on it. Other than the magnification I know nothing else about the scope. 3-9 seems pretty popular, and Leupold has a great reputation, but I am out to learn more...

Thanks for the info guys. The gas system depends on the barrel length. So, it would seem that more people are opting for the shorter barrel length...I would assume that is because people want a more "handy" and fast rifle. What is the ballistics difference between a 16" barrel and a 20"...

Whiskey11, Thanks for the comments on the barrel. I personally am looking for my first rifle, and find it somewhat difficult to locate a rifle with a heavy barrel (in my area). It will serve as a "fun" paper puncher most of the time, but will find its way out into the field looking for deer...
