What clever little things have you "invented or discovered" that you can share?

Tumbling Media Sieve, Small Storage Bins, Sorted Brass I use the frying basket from an old deep fryer as a sieve for by tumbling media. I found a lid from an old crock pot that just fit on the opening of the basket and and I turn it upside down and various directions to get all the media out of...

Finding a good way to view targets down range, binoculars...

I know you said you didn't want a spotting scope, but I can tell you from years of experience that you cannot hold the binoculars still enough to see bullet holes at 100 yards and certainly not at 200 yds. I own a pair of high-dollar Burris binoculars and I cant see the bullet holes in targets...

What caliber is best for a new gun owner?

I agree with all those who suggested a 22LR rifle. The reasons: SAFETY! Low recoil. Low muzzle blast/report. Inexpensive ammo. Generally more places one can shoot them. Low recoil and low report/muzzle blast are essential for those just starting in the shooting sport to prevent them from...

What Do You Do After Making The Shot?

I was reading about a guy who shot a deer and it fell and he immediately started climbing down from his stand when the animal got up and ran off and he never found it. Made me think of what one should do immediately after the shot was made. If he had stayed in his stand and loaded another round...

What is your most memorable shot?

It was the first shot at a deer with my, then, new .45 caliber muzzle loader that I had put together from a kit. It was made in Spain by Jukar. It was just a cheap, traditional side-lock gun, but for some reason it shot the Thompson Maxi-balls very well. I had practiced quite q bit but hadn't...

New to reloading, need help on getting setup

More than anything you need a couple of reloading manuals/books. I recommend that one of them be Lee's reloading book. He pushes Lee stuff quite a bit in the book, but it gives you a really good overview of reloading. You need to read everything in the book except load data. You need to know not...

    .243 100 grain vs 80 grain

Hey guys, a .243 is more than adequate for deer sized game. I reload for my .243 and use Speer Hot Core 80 grain bullets and they work great on whitetail deer here in southeast Oklahoma. If you have good shot placement they'll take down any deer. However, if your going to shoot them in the rear...

I want a bolt action rifle

I don't know of any bolt action .357 rifles. New England makes a break action single shot, but that's all I know of.

    Single shot?

Reliable. Safe. Less expensive (some are). A little lighter. Nostalgia. Reminds me of my first gun. Challenging--makes you make the first, one shot count.

    Accurate .22 bolt action <$400?

You just can't beat the heavy barrel Savage MkII bolt action with wood stock. The wood stock is part of the key here. It is much more stable under various temperature and weather conditions. I believe you can get one with a heavy barrel for around $300. When you find the ammo it likes best, It...

    223 sabots in 308?

I have tried enough of them to buy a cheap .223 rifle, and I finally gave up on them. You just can't get them to stabilize the bullets and then you have that plastic fouling. They just don't do what they're advertised to do. They sound great, but they just don't deliver!:banghead:

    .22 hunting rifle?

I have several 22lrs, but my favorite for small game hunting and for target shooting is my Savage MkII bolt action. It is very accurate and yet is very reasonably priced.

New To The HIGHROAD.org Hi! My name is Red. I live in Southeast Oklahoma. I like to hunt (deer mostly) and fish. I hunt with a bow, muzzle loader, rifles, and pistols. But my greatest passion is reloading. I load for a number of rifle calibers and a couple of pistols. I reload primarily for...

what's the "most displeased with" gun you ever bought?

I didn't know much about guns back then, but I bought a .270 (can't remember who made it now) and it wouldn't even stay on a letter size sheet of paper at 100 yds. I sold it to someone--boy I hope I told them about its lack of accuracy.:uhoh:
