Stopped Cleaning your Gun! I did - You Too?

Bought 12 gauge shotgun approx 1959. Gave it to son approx 10-12 yrs ago. Never ever cleaned - not once. Performs perfectly - never a misfire. A carry pistol gets regular attention - I have seen pocket lint cause an auto to malfunction. If holster carry revolvers perhaps 2 or 3 years -...

    New NAA Product Release

I am continually surprised that more ppl have not shot themselves with a naa. They are not safe for ordinary carry. We currently have 6 or 7 naa's, and they all have the same fault. Resting in the 'safety' notch it requires but a mere brush or touch to release the cylinder to spin in either...

    Backpacking with a Firearm

All seriousness aside though...I recommended the PMR30 .22 Mag in a post above...if you fire that thing 3X3 or more and no one responds then there is no one around for miles to begin with. One thing it is, is LOUD. Son-in-law has the PMR30 & I totally agree - LOUD it is. Much better than an...

    Backpacking with a Firearm

Where I generally hike, gunshots, even a .22 pistol, echo and carry something fierce. If you know there may be people looking for you, a couple bursts of three shots could definitely assist in them narrowing down your location. I see you are from CO - where I now reside. Perhaps a .22lr might...

    Backpacking with a Firearm

My first extended solo backpack trip was in 1955. Countless trips since - mostly in the N/W such as the very remote Selway-Bitteroots in Mt/Id, also the Tongass in Alaska. Suffice to say I am quite experienced. Moose, elk, and bear are common. Have stood face-to-face with mountain lion -...

Bear defense pistols: .357 or .45acp. Pick one!

If you were to lean your rifle against a tree "way over there" while you watched a griz being released from a bear trap then you deserve to become bear scat on the forest floor.

Bear defense pistols: .357 or .45acp. Pick one!

Seen that grin charge flick a number of times. I've never seen a real bear that fast - and I have seen many at a full run. Appears he had feet in starting blocks - or possibly film is speeded up. In either case a man who is one with his rifle would level him - even at that speed.

Bear defense pistols: .357 or .45acp. Pick one!

In my estimation the limited reaction time during an all-out charge is overrated. This is my experience only and is based on just one full-on bear charge. Approx 200 pound black bear uphill. My first shot was approx 50-60 yards, then with a full-on unimpeded charge directly toward me there...

Bear defense pistols: .357 or .45acp. Pick one!

The 45acp is much closer to the 9mm and a better comparison. The .357 is far and away a better choice. A long time ago in N Idaho/Montana I would bring home black bear harvested with a 30/06. My kids grew up on tasty bear meat. Once I encountered a bear face-to-face at @ 10 yards, and all I...

Home defense, gun storage and placement

I would not want a loaded revolver around the house - just one careless moment coupled with a 3 yr old can be tragic. What about a small 3at or LCP with an empty chamber? I don't think any child could cycle that very stiff slide.

Trekking rifle(s)/Long guns. Again. Savage 219 with .30WCF 26" Barrel.

The older I got the less I could carry. Today a 3 pound long gun is all I want. Snake Charmer .410 is 3 pounds and can handle most anything. Henry AR-7 is 28 OUNCES with aftermarket stock - inexpensive, accurate, reliable semi-auto. For me much better than a handgun and breaks down to carry...

    It sucks to get older...

Just noticed post from '.309 Norma' re: giving up backpacking. No way! I see the Idaho location - I lived in N Idaho in the 60s and 70s and backpacked the very remote Selway-Bitterroot wilderness many, many times - also the Tongass in Alaska. Gotta get in hiking shape b/c we plan to get back...

    It sucks to get older...

I'm now in my 80s and went backpacking/shooting on my birthday. Never had a surgery or illness in my life - have original teeth - and no restrictions whatsoever on recently renewed driver's license. Still work - physical labor, and don't want to quit. Dollar store reading glasses work well...

Guy at the range took some shrapnel

'Kickback' is bizarre. We had such an occurrence at a kid's summer camp at a controlled range with several firearms instructors - bullet kicked straight back and bruised his forehead. We had a physics prof in the group and asked him how that was possible. He said that can happen from...

Adding naa mini cylinder later on

If you have the mag version you may not need the LR cylinder. Others have suggested that you can cut off the head of a mag cartridge and slip the LR (or short etc) into the mag case. I tried it and it works. I learned the hard way not to shorten the mag case but just cut off the head only...
