    The 686

686 / M, 4" Apparently, from reading another post, this was a first generation revolver with the M indicating it was returned and modified by S&W. Also, the serial number is preceeded by the letters AHD. Guess I need to do some more reading about this revolver.

    S&W 617 / 17 club

Yes, bought in 2006 it is the 617-5" with 6 shot cylinder. I've been away from the gun scene for a couple of years. Apparently the 6" only comes with the 10 shot cylinder now? Thanks for the link kle.

    S&W 617 / 17 club

A stock 617-6 that I purchased a couple of years ago. An excellent gun. Was wondering if someone can recommend a place to purchase a wooden grip for this? Cheers

My first hand gun purchased in the early 80's. Wanted it as a light gun to take backpacking but didn't have a clue what made a quality weapon. These days it makes a nice conversation piece and I wouldn't sell it.

    M36...Chiefs Special?

This is my S&W model 36 (no dash) that I bought in July. It is probably 95% and I paid $325. Serial #435*** would probably put it around 1963 / 64. It has a 3" barrel which is a little more rare than the 2". Not sure but I was told that if the gun is a no dash model then the barrel will be...

Handgun Type Smugness, is it as wide spread as it seems to me?

Yep, whether I go to a ham radio store, hiking/camping store, canoe/boat store, computer store or especially a gun store, I always seem to run into one of those macho windbags who has all the answers. Sometimes it’s the store clerk but usually it’s some loudmouth customer who wants everybody to...

Problem with S&W 617 shell extractor

Wow, Ok, Ok,… :uhoh: After I had the problem I wasn’t sure what you called the thing that pushes out the shells when you push the ejector rod. Think it may be called the ejector star but not sure about that. So I took the photo to illustrate the problem and help me describe the situation...

Problem with S&W 617 shell extractor

Hi Ron, the photo is a little deceptive but the crud looking stains weren’t causing the problem. But I’ve been listening to the overall consensus about polishing the cylinder chambers. I spent a good deal of time today cleaning the chambers and then fired the gun using the last 12 of my old...

Problem with S&W 617 shell extractor

Well, I’ve got a lead on a gunsmith though we don’t have as many around here as one would expect. If I were 20, I’d be looking into going into that line of work. And the warrantee. Yep, good point. The reason I’ve been looking into other courses of action is due to my inexperience with...

Problem with S&W 617 shell extractor

OK, I scrubbed the heck out of the cylinders and also scrounged up some Federal ammo that was lying around. Shot six rounds of the Remington and six of the Federal. (Really is nice when you live in a place where you can walk outside and shoot). The Federal shot well and the spent shells where...

Problem with S&W 617 shell extractor

Hmmm... Did I mention that those shells are really in there tight? I had to use pliers to get the ones in the photograph out. It just seems like something is askew. But unfired ammo goes in fine and isn't tight at all. The gun is clean and the binding started on the first six shots today...

Problem with S&W 617 shell extractor

My new (6 months) S&W 617 has occasionally had a problem ejecting spent .22 shells. I’d have to push really hard on the ejector rod to get them to come out. Today, the cylinder started binding after I’d take a few shots as if the spent shells where rubbing against the frame. I’m not versed...

    My Single Six Screw-up

At the time I was such a novice that I couldn't judge the accuracy. Could probably tell now, now that I'm up to amateur level. Been shooting a Blackhawk that I just got yesterday. Boy I like these Ruger single actions.

    SINGLE ACTION

I like their looks and accuracy. Actually, I think the popularity of single actions is on the rise. Massad Ayoob has written an excellent article in Backwoods Home Magazine about the current popularity of old western style single action handguns here.
