    Loading .40 S&W

Well, winning the pistol was no reflection of my abilities. I did, however, visualize reading the numbers as they were called out beforehand. Do you think it might have helped? :) First off, I'm confused about what I've heard that .40 S&W is a temperamental high pressure load. Lyman#49...

    Loading .40 S&W

Hello, All. I shot my first IDPA match last weekend and had a great time. The match was really well run and my squad was an easygoing, helpful group. I'd already had fun at my local club matches (USPSA-like) and one UPSPA shoot--it was nice to find a friendly place at the IDPA match. It's all...

    Just Purchased. . . Budget Set-Up

First, my thoughts and prayers are with your son and you and your family. Second, be safe. If you're going to push limits, get a chronograph and monitor what you're doing. I'm a newbie here. Others will chime in. Take care, Sherri

What clever little things have you "invented or discovered" that you can share?

I jumped to the last unread message and landed on page 34, so I guess I've seen most of this thread, but it's been months, and I don't recall if I saw mention of these thoughts... I have a perforated anti-fatigue floor mat at my press and try to remember to start every reloading session with...

    Thinking about IDPA

I shot my first Action Pistol event today and had a great time. It was like riding a roller-coaster--it's not hard to see how one could spend every weekend at this. :)

    Some very newbie questions

I've taken an interest in shooting and reloading over the last year. It's been an interesting trek. There are some very good beginner videos on the Ruger website: http://ruger.com Choose NEWS & RESOURCES, then VIDEOS. At the bottom of the screen is a link to BEGINNER SHOOTING TIPS.

    Slam Fire

Hey, GLOOB. I'll perform the firing pin checks you suggest tomorrow. I may take the firearm to a gunsmith before I take it to the range. I'm still thinking it through. My good friend and mentor was with me at the range yesterday. When the pistol went click, I waited, dropped the magazine...

    Slam Fire

Today at the range, the gun went bang, bang, and then click. I waited a bit, then dropped the magazine and locked open the slide. What popped out was a peppered round (the primer was dinged). I used my flashlight to confirm a clear barrel. I loaded that dinged round into the top of the magazine...

    Front sight/reading glasses

I'm having trouble with my vision at the range, too. My reading/computer glasses are good for the front sight, but horrible for the target, and removing safety glasses to move my readers to squint at the target is a hassle. I had an exam in late December, and my prescription hadn't changed...

.45 ACP w/ 230gr Rainier and Remington Primers

I appreciate the thoughtful responses. Thank you. How do you determine the desired velocity for a given bullet? The only information I've seen about desired bullet velocities was in Ayoob's Concealed Carry, where he talked about what's been effective for LEO in various calibers. That's all...

.45 ACP w/ 230gr Rainier and Remington Primers

Went to the range yesterday and fired 4.7gr Bullseye 1.260" rounds: Rounds: 40 High: 741.0 Low: 700.4 ES: 40.6 Avg: 724.1 SD: 8.3 I thought they felt a tad snappier. They also consistently struck the target below where I aimed. I then shot a magazine each of 1.260" (this batch) and...

.45 ACP w/ 230gr Rainier and Remington Primers

I finally got some chronograph data this afternoon: Rounds: 34 High: 740.5 Low: 689.2 ES: 51.3 Avg: 715.7 SD: 11.8 The rounds were once fired Winchester brass, Remington 2-1/2 primers, 4.7gr Bullseye, and Rainier 230gr PRN. Just checked what's left of that batch and they're mostly...

    overall formula for reloading choices

What was that business about breaking the donuts? I think that's something to do with flattened primers, but I'd like some confirmation. I haven't yet had to plow my way to the shooting shack, but I have slogged through the rain. Sometimes, you just want to shoot, no? :)

.45 ACP w/ 230gr Rainier and Remington Primers

I did have a great time. Just finished loading up my meager supply of .45 brass. The clouds appear to be lifting a little, so perhaps a quick run to the range to get some chrony data is in order. When I asked, "Where should I go from here?" I was thinking calibers. :)

.45 ACP w/ 230gr Rainier and Remington Primers

That Springfield did indeed have my name on it. After a testy first acquaintance (sliced open the palm of my hand while taking her down for a cleaning), she and I sent 100 factory rounds downrange with no hiccups. Followed that up with half a dozen reloads (4.7 Bullseye behind a 230gr Rainier...
