    Self defense piece for Mom

Well, just an update for those who may be interested. As of now, Mom is digging my old, worn H&R in .32 S&W. I am still on the lookout for something new for her that she might enjoy though.

Not a bad idea to look into that one. That may be a great way for her to get into a semi-auto. I think I'll stop at my favorite local gun store on the way home from work and see about a couple of the ones that have been suggested. Ultimately, the choice is hers but hey, who doesn't like gun...

    Self defense piece for Mom

Yeah, we've tried that with a few different guns. I have an LCP, a stainless AMT backup and a Makarov in .380. The racking method you described puts too much pressure on the palm area of her hand where they had made the incisions and makes it painful. Thats the reason she wants to stay with a...

    Self defense piece for Mom

That is an interesting thought. I just looked up that 731 UL and it says its a 17 ounce gun. Looks like it is out of production though. I hadn't really given much thought to the .32 H&R magnum. If I understand correctly, they perform somewhere in between the standard .38 and the .380 auto...

I like the idea of her staying with what she is familiar with too, and right now she has +P's in it. I think its just the ultra light weight that is becoming a problem. I'm not talking about a feeble little old lady with a walker and no teeth. She has had surgery on her hands and has lost...

    Self defense piece for Mom

Oneounce said: "Then go let your mom decide. You deserve a Major Fail for making your mom try to shoot a 357 from such a light gun. I am over 6'3 and I won't attempt that stupidity." You are 6'3" and you can't shoot a scandium .357? Maybe you need a little hand workout yourself. As for...

    Self defense piece for Mom

Sorry everyone, I wanted to use quotes of a few of you to respond in kind, but I can't figure out how to do it. I am a bit computer challenged.

    Self defense piece for Mom

Don't get me wrong guys, I am not anti-.38 cal. I just want Mom to have the best combination of stopping power and manageability. Perhaps I am a cynic because I carry a 5 inch 1911 all day every day. I like the idea of the .327 Federal but I still have to wonder about the recoil. I think...

    Self defense piece for Mom

Greetings everyone and happy Independence Day! I have been exploring some possibilities for a carry gun for my mother. She is 67 with a slight build, and her hands have lost quite a bit of strength over the last several years making a semi-auto virtually impossible for her to manipulate and...

Concealed Carriers, do you carry spare magazines?

My daily carry gun most often is my Kimber 1911 in a Galco King Tuk, and I absolutely never carry fewer than two spare mags. Sometimes I even add in my LCP and a spare for it to my kit depending on what part of the Godforsaken city I find myself required to visit. As so many have pointed out...

    Which gun to buy/keep

Wow, I got my wife an XD Subcompact in .40 that she absolutely loves. She is also pretty small, only 5' 2" and 125 pounds, but strong and muscular so maybe that is why she doesn't have problems. I offered to get her an Airweight or even give her my LCP but she opts to stay with the XD.

What do you carry when you actually hike?

The 'backpacking' I mainly do is the hiking during archery season which occasionally includes 2-3 overnighters in a spike tent. I typically cover 6 or 8 miles a day during bow season for elk and I carry the same pistol that I carry every day concealed. Kimber TLE/RL-II full frame .45 with...

    Kimber Yonkers vs. Oregon?

Man, that's purty. NO holster wear on it. It looks like the back is checkered but the front isn't checkered. More like a rough looking texture. Is checkering the front something they started later? My NY TLE is checkered front and back. (Although it doesn't matter because I have a Houge...

    Kimber Yonkers vs. Oregon?

MIM parts? If I understand correctly, MIM is 'metal injection molded' right? What parts do they make with that process in a 1911 and is that something to beware of?

    Kimber Yonkers vs. Oregon?

As a native of Oregon I remember when they moved to NY, but I never knew about all the dirty details, bankruptcies, graft and corruption. It almost seems like they were being run by congress or something! That being said, I absolutely love my TLE/RL-II with the Yonkers stamp. It has been my...
