I would vote for saving for an 870 or a 500. The 500 is available at walmart with a 28" bbl (I think) and 3 chokes for $217. A little long for home defense but I'm not a big advocate of the SWAT team tactics if you have a home invasion anyway. Back you and your's into a corner, call 911...

I don't see a shotgun in this plan. IMO the most fun you can have with a firearm comes from the end of a big smoking 12 ga. bore. Cheap to buy, cheap to shoot. Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 make a great place to start for around $300. A bit more for the Remington if you get a decent used...

Oh geez. It took me all day to realize how the trigger on it works. Sooo... I don't have to manually select the second barrel from the selector on the safety. Gawd I feel a little stupid now. That should make my second shot a whole lot easier than I'd thought it would be.
