Love the .44 magnum, and like the .41 magnum. But if you are only to have one magnum, my vote is for the .357 magnum. If you reload this doesn't apply, but... For non-reloaders, the .357 magnum has the cheapest ammo AND most availability. The .357 magnum is capable of firing .38 cowboy loads...

Why are the people that voted no generally not stating why?

The heaviest loads I am comfortable with are hot .44 magnum loads. 320 grain bullets loaded to the max for example. The Bisley works fine for these, for my hands. Anything that recoils more than this to me is unpleasant regardless of the grip. The very hot .454 Casull and more powerful...

To add to my post, I think a .44 special +P+ chambering would be AWESOME (I know there is no such official chambering, but I want the hottest .44 special load that can safely be shot in a medium frame GP 100). If the GP 100 could fire as hot of a .44 special as possible, I'd be VERY HAPPY.

This is why I like revolvers 1. Very large range of powers. I can load .38 special cowboy loads that barely have more recoil than a .22, all the way up to 200 grain loads that could serve as a backup black bear defense load. Same applies to other revolver chamberings like the .44 special /...

I think black bears are generally more timid. The ones I've seen while hiking in California generally keep their distance as long as you show them respect.

Anything smaller than .308 is asking for trouble as bear defense. Having said that, a .223 is better than nothing. If that is all you have, your best bet is to fire as many controlled shots as possible before the bear is on you.

I prefer the Bisley grip, hammer, and trigger personally. The grip feels solid and steady in my hand, and I have an easy time cocking the hammer with the way the hammer is shaped. I get my best groups when shooting my Ruger Bisleys, and they seem to really make even the hottest .44 magnum...
