The Iraqi's and the Afgans were offered M16's a while back. They flat refused them. They were more comfortable with the AK's. They require less maintance that the M16's so it is better suited to the dusty terrain.

The Marines and Seals use the .308, the Britts use the .338. I think the Army uses .308 also, but I may be mistaken. All seem to swear by their caliber.
