Thanks for every one of the responses guys. I certainly will heed your advice and I won't drop the possibility of mechanical engineering just yet. I'm still very undecided but you all are right... not being strong in math isn't a sufficient reason to drop the thought of studying M.E. altogether...
I would want to do the latter.
I want to delve into the most technical aspects of firearms and master them all. I know that I certainly have the drive and dedication for it, but the circumstances are what I'm concerned about.
The only bit that I'm skeptical about when it comes to studying mechanical engineering is that my math skills are not very strong. Long story short, I lost both of my parents while I was in high school and had no stable place to live for a short amount of time. I missed school and although I'm...
Alright, so I've been on this forum a lot in the past and have asked similar questions. I always valued the amazing responses that I've received by you all. After my last visit here, I pretty much set my sights on becoming a mechanical engineer because I figured if I couldn't get a position in...
Yeah sorry about the vagueness. What I was thinking about was an indoor, public range that offers all rifles, shotguns, and handgun rentals. Possibly New England.
I know that even that is a bit vague, but it's just an idea. What I'm uncertain about is how to offer something that's in demand and...
Sorry to bump but I just wanted to ask a question without starting a new thread.
In the future, what does it take to own a range? Of course you need a lot of money to even get anything going, but how realistic does the idea itself sound.
I got medically DQ'd from the Marine Corps due to an exercise-induced leg injury. I was going infantry.
I'd like to move to New Hampshire in the near future. It's beautiful as well as free.
Long story short, I'm a New Yorker who has been interested in firearms since I was around 16. Everything from the internal mechanisms to the history of firearms has fascinated me since then and still does. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to obtain much hands-on experience with guns due to the...
I'm aware of the downsides of caseless ammunition. However, if in the future the failure of the ammo to seal the breach was eliminated, I think it would have some promise. I know that the higher rate of fire brings with it more complex mechanisms, so it may not be worth it.
Maybe a better way...
As one who takes interest in the history, evolution, and internal operation of firearms, I've been wondering what further technological advancements of firearms can be developed. In my opinion, the firearm is in its most efficient form. Ammunition is the only component that I can see evolving...
I have always been interested in designing firearms as a career, mainly due to my fascination with the inner workings and operations of them. In addition, I've always had the ability to grasp mechanical concepts.
My question is: Is majoring in ME simply to try to land a job in firearm design...
If you ask me, I think it's unfortunate. Years and years of craftsmanship and technique that has survived this long just thrown away. My take on it is that from a financial standpoint, it is nearly impossible for a smith to stay afloat. Owning a shop itself is costly, as is equipment. It also...
As I've been browsing through various sites and forums, I've been hearing how many local gunsmiths have been going out of business. Is there any reason why the gunsmithing business isn't booming like it used to be? Also, why is the trade more readily taught by family or friends and/or passed...
